Title: Shootin' the breeze

"We were out on the desert camping when the wind came up and we had to
lash our tents and bikes down. Hard fast strong wind! Luckily Vern had a
couple deadeyes to hook up to the stakes we drove into the ground, otherwise
we wouldn't have had anything we could loosen or tighten, dependent on how
strong the wind was. He saved our bikes and tents from blowin' away. I
guess he had them leftover from his merchant marine days or somethin'."
*dead.eye n (1748) 1: a rounded wood block that is encircled by a
rope or an iron band and pierced with holes to receive the lanyard and
that is used esp. to set up shrouds and stays.

"Wow, it was that bad, huh? What'd ya do the next day, just sleep?"
"No way. Claire brought her guns with her and we target-practiced. Gawd,
she's a real good shooter. I don't think she missed a beer can or bottle
the whole day!"
*dead.eye n (1748) 2: an unerring marksman.

"I heard Sis and her had a shootin' contest out there one time and both of
'em are pretty darn good."
"Yeah, 'cept everyone was real nervous 'cause all of us figgered they'd start
shootin' at each OTHER..."

'Tis Wednesday for us all. Odds are 'twill be sunny, eh?
later,
d.
