Title: A Bump?
"Just a beer, some-a that good stuff on tap, ok?" As Vern limps into Bikers.
"You ok? I noticed when you came in that you're walking sorta...
carefully. Did you take a dive somewhere?"
"Went down after I took ma Hogg 'cross a thank-you-maam. Nearly broke
every bone in my neck 'cause I ended up underneath with Hogg on my
head!"
*thank-you-ma'am n [prob. fr. its causing a nodding of the
head] (1849): a bump or depression in a road; esp: a ridge or
hollow made across a road on a hillside to cause water to run
off.
"One draft comin' up. How'd your Hogg come out? Any damage? It still
runnin'?"
"It's ok. After the fall I took it up South Hill jes' to make sure we're
both ok, but half-way up we both sorta lost it. I don't feel much like movin'
around right now." Vern carefully slowly sits at the bar, groans, and says,
"Hogg Broke fork,
Not much torque.
I sprained neck,
Me torpid wreck!"
*tor.pid adj [L torpidus, fr. torpere to be sluggish or numb; akin
to Lith tirpti to become numb] (1613) 1 a: having lost motion or
the power of exertion or feeling: dormant, numb. b: sluggish in
functioning or acting. 2: lacking in energy or
vigor: apathetic, dull -- tor.pid.i.ty n.
Jake responds, "Vern the poet!" And recites, as he places the draft in front
of Vern, "Here's a beer
for a
Likeable biker!"
2Day's 2sday.
