Title: Speedy Sis
Jake's drying mugs and cups, stacking them as he listens to Joey, "Sis doesn't comb her hair, she just moves so fast it all comes down perfectly in place. I've never seen anyone so friggin' fast, man. Did you see her move in front of Claire th' other night, when Claire had that gun and shot the dude?" "I thought she just stood up where she sat. Wasn't she sittin' right there, next table to Claire?" Vern asks as he reaches for the bowl of nuts. "Nope, she was sittin' with me, right here at the bar." Joey says quickly. "Ahhhh, bullshit! This here's at least 40 feet over to there. She couldn't never make it here to there in the time Claire..." Vern pops half a handful of nuts into his mouth before he finishes what he was saying. Joey is animated and obviously disturbed as he recounts that evening, "I was talkin' to Sis, Claire screamed, BLAM! Gunshot. Sis was there. I thought I had my hand on her hand but she was standin' over there! I remember lookin' down thinkin' her hand was still there, and how I fuckin' nearly fell down 'cause she was standin' over there! It was like SHE was a simulacrum or somethin' and, goddammit, she was over there! Her fuckin' hand was still warm, under my hand...I hadda look ta make sure... there weren't two of her!" *sim.u.la.crum \.sim-y*-'la-k-r*m, -'lak-\ \-r*\ n or sim.u.la.cra also simulacrums [L, fr. simulare] pl 1: IMAGE, REPRESENTATION 2: an insubstantial form or semblance of something : SHADOW; also : TRACE. "I never have been able to figger out how she does that trick where she makes the beer mug disappear while you concentrate on it. Like it's right there in front of ya and all of a sudden it's on the next table! It's wierd, man!" "Yeah, she did that to me once an' it made me so sick I hadda run for the head. I got real dizzy an' my ears rung." Joey shudders, remembering the dizziness and nausea. Another week on the brink of ending... how quickly they seem to pass. Don't blink you'll miss all the brinks! later, d.
