Title: Jake's guilt
When I arrived at Bikers, Oscar and Jake were obviously in the
midst of a dispute. They were in the office, my office, and over
the usual noise of Bikers I could hear one of them yelling at the
other, and I thought I heard my name at one point. The whole
place smelled very strongly of grapefruit and rotten citrus mixed
with rubbing alcohol or something medicinal.
"You can't fool ANYONE with that, especially when THIS still
exists! I never thought you'd be so stupid as to try a thing like
this," Oscar's voice pierced through the wall and around the
metallic uproar.
I decided to walk into the office and find out what the problem
was but the cast-iron lever which replaced the door knob would
not budge. I knocked but it was like knocking on a solid concrete
slab -- no noise, no effect.
"I've been here for 15 years, even before HE was here, and
look what it got me, nuthin but a pair of dishpan hands and a
smelly place to live!" Jake had complained to me before, I
remembered, about how I treated him like an employee after
all the years we had known each other. He wanted a piece of
Bikers but I couldn't bring myself to let any of it go.
"OK, ok-- I won't be part of this. I'm leaving!" The door opened
to reveal Jake standing over the desk, with what appeared to be a
deed and other contracts strewn about on the top of the desk.

Oscar didn't seem at all surprised to see me. As he passed me
through the door there was an instant of comedy as we struggled
briefly, Oscar leaving and my entering. "You'd better have a talk
with him. He's at it again! IN fact, ask him about his new
girl friend who likes to detonate small animals and large buildings!!"
