Title: A Wealth of Heat
We've hit the road to New Jersey for the National Hog Rally. Sis,
Jake, B.J., L.A., Bell, Jane, and PeckFace. Vern and Joey are joining us in
Gila Bend at the Owl Buffet. It's very hot out here on the desert, just east
of El Centro. The sun beats down on us, reminding us of how puny we are and
what a really powerful juggernaut old Sol is. The breezes which we
create as we speed along is all that moves out here on Ogilby Road. The heat
is pressure.
Belle motions for us to pull over into and under a small grove of ageless Palo
Verde trees.
"Maaaan, this place is just about 130 degrees fahren-fucking-hite!" Jake says.
"How's about the great nabob Boss-man demanding a bit of air conditioning?"
B.J. says. No one laughs. Even in the breezeless shade the heat of the sand
beneath our booted feet rises and creates extreme human discomfort.
As I look down the oven-temperature road it seems like natation is
possible. The rippling heat waves make the blacktop appear watery and in
the distance great pools of liquid heat cover the asphalt.
"We gotta move on. Come-on, let's get outta here. I need a cold beer at Owl,"
Sis exclaims, and we move on once Belle returns from the bushes back to her
hog.
