Title: Killer Rabbit?
After Jane's done messing with Roach, she takes her beer and sits next to Sis
at a table across the room. Roach turns to me and asks,
"You heard from your governor friend Rabbit Pete lately, Boss?"
I'm a bit surprised that Roach knows Pete's handle is Rabbit. I answer,
"Last week. He came down for a visit and a chat, why...?"
Roach moves closer, as if possessed with some scheme he wants to share with me.
He has literally gulped two broths and before answering does a tequila shooter,
"I've heard it said that he's a real two-faced highbinder. I've heard he fucks
his so-called friends if he has ta. In fact..." Roach lowers his voice to a
near whisper, holds his shot glass up for Ray to see, and reeking of chicken
broth breath adds, "Yer little political friend's the one who paid me ta take
you out."
I'm stunned. It's one of those times when the universe sort of stops and
allows you to take a very close look. I've always known Rabbit was ruthless and
willing to push the limits, but I'd never think of him as some sort of
Machiavellian killer. In his defense I answer,
"C'mon, Roach. You're nuts if you think I'm to believe you. Anyway, why would
he get YOU do it? You two have never know each other..."
Roach interrupts and says, "You don't know EVERYthing, Boss. Rabbit and I have
had certain business arrangements over the years..."
