Title: Joey to the World

Joey very carefully peeled, unpinned himself from the heavy
blanket and needles of glass sticking through the fabric and
into him. He was in the process of dabbing each tiny wound
with a washcloth when he heard something in the alley.
Cautiously he looked out the glassless window. He jumped
back from the window when he saw the flash engulf Claire.
When he looked again, after the impact of the blast had
passed, he was surprised to see Sis bending over Claire's
prostrate form, probably checking for a pulse or breathing.

"She alive?" Joey called out the window. Sis didn't hear him
because once again the neighborhood was a riot of noise
and complaint.

Joey turned from the window and began packing his bag.
He owned only two, at most three changes of clothes. Most
of his belongings were comprised of books so he knew he
couldn't just run out. He would have to return for his small
but focused and heavy library. 4 boxes, he already knew.

Sis was at the window yelling at him to call an ambulance.
Claire was in bad shape but still alive. The alley was
alive with tumult.

Yep, yet another Wednesday, a middle of the week day,
a hump-day. Expecting rain? In San Diego? How dare
it (they)!
