Title: Rabbit's Tale
"I screwed up, created bad karma for myself. I wouldn't be in this mess if
I had just listened to OUR mother. Bell was right, I was stupid."
"Bell KNEW you put a contract out on me? You did it because of Yates' files?"
I didn't tell her I wanted you DEAD, just wanted to scare you. I needed the
files and you wouldn't, or couldn't, give them up. I wanted you out of the way
but the whole damned computer security industry AND the Yates considered you as
some kind of mahatma. So I told Roach I'd set him up for life if he either
scared you or - killed you. He took the latter seriously, and I should have
known better." Rabbit tries to sit up but the pain from his shattered left
ankle, plus the deep gash on his rear remind him to lie still. He tries to
keep the pressure on the towels covering the ragged 8" tear in his ass.
"You tried to hugger-mugger Roaches' attempt at blowing me up by sending Koval
out to scare me, right? You thought he'd convince me to give the files up?"
"No, I hired Jane and Shane. Told them to divert you from going after me.
Koval's a Fed, I couldn't 'hire' him. I think Jane tried to scare Roach..."
In the distance the paramedics' sirens are screaming toward us. Rabbit groans,
turns pale and passes out.
