Title: Promotion at the Center
"It has been decided that you are now the departmental
Management Services Officer. You will report directly to
Dr. Yates. There's a meeting of all the department heads
in an hour and you should be there."
"When was this decided? Why didn't someone tell me?"
"I'm not sure, but someone thought you'd go along with
the promotion since it means quite a raise in pay as well
as status. You might want to set up a meeting with the
Director and discuss schedules and personnel. You will
have 30 people working for you, some of them Senior
Scientists and Research Fellows."
As Sis stood there in her levis and 'leave me be!' logo
sweatshirt with tennies she wondered how she would get
along with a Director who was a known letch. In fact he
had been warned twice by the HR department for sexual
harassment.
"You're going to have to dress differently because of the
status of the job and people around you. Generally the rule
is that levis and tennies are OUT, and watch your language!"
par.ve.nu \'pa_:r-v*-.n(y)u_:\ n : one who has recently or suddenly
risen to wealth or power and has not yet secured the social
position appropriate to it.
"AH, there she is. Jeannie, isn't it? Or do we all call
you 'Sis'?" As he approached Sis could see that he was
giving her the up-and-down looks but at the same time
trying to keep his eyes (and probably thoughts) on her
eyes. It was the director, 6'1", under 40, a tad
overweight but very nearly buff, olive skin and black hair.
Sis was taken by him but she knew by the way he was
leering at her there was danger here.
"Jean is ok. Nice meeting you again."
As they shook hands Sis felt a slight tingle of excitement,
and remembered the rumors that
he had become uxorious in an attempt to expunge
the documented history of harassment.
