Title: Itching Watching Listening

He sets the binoculars down, rolls over to relieve the tingling sleepy
muscle numbness in his left elbow and fingers.

He is sunburned, covered with sweat, dirty,
his skin hurts from the sun,
the dirt makes him itch,
he doesn't care,
he doesn't scratch.

He will find out what they are up to,
even if he has to lie on the side of this hill
in this god-forsaken place for another couple weeks,
he will, he will find out.
They all spurn him, he knows it.
He feels disdain toward them because they talk about him
behind his back when he's not there.
He will hear it this time, the whispering,
hear what it is they are saying.

The gun in his side pocket pokes into his hip so he rolls over
onto his stomach and quickly brings the binoculars back up to his face.

I envy paranoids; they actually feel people are paying attention to them.
