Title: Sis Assists?
It is Yates silhouetted in the doorway to Conference room #3.
Both Ron and Henry stood when they realized who it was and
when Yates muttered, "It's ok, sit back down, I'll just listen..."
they shuffled and straightened papers and re-sat. Yates held
the door open and Sis entered, notepad in hand, sat
across from me, and he sat at the head of the table.
"So, how did you do at the Poker run? Did you get out of TJ
without any problems?" Yates is looking at me.
"I only remember a Queen and two wild cards. I'm not sure
I finished..."
"You beat us to Gila," Sis said, smiling. "Harley wins again,
right? You won over five K, bro."
"Yeah. Ok, Yates, what's the deal here? Couldn't Ron and
Henry here take care of this?"
"Have you logged in yet?" Ron's asking me.
"Go ahead, Try it... Log in but use an incorrect 2nd password."I glance
across at Sis who appears to be in one of her
omphaloskeptic modes with her eyes half shut, as if she is
nodding-out. She opens one eye, half smiles, and cues me
to go on with it.
om.pha.lo.skep.sis n [NL, fr. Gk omphalos + skepsis examination--more at
spy] (1925): contemplation of one's navel as an aid to meditation; also:
inertia 2.
The terminal in front of me accepts the first level and when
I hit the enter key using the second password with one letter
incorrect, the terminal is dead.
"Dead? Just dead? Re-start! Why didn't it blow?" Ron asks,
totally exasperated, and answers himself,
"Because HE did it! You SEE? It IS him, damnit. Him and
his persnickety DOCs!"
"No, he uses oneiromancy! You dumb ass, how could he have
anything to do with terminals blowing?"
onei.ro.man.cy n [Gk oneiros + E -mancy] (1652): divination by means of dreams.
"Ron, Henry, why don't you go on down to ops and check if
anyone down there saw anything on the system just now..."
Yates smiles at me as the two of them leave after gathering
up papers and folders.
"In this era, both of them are abecedarians! Ya know, you're
the only one who can deal with this..."
abe.ce.dar.i.an n [ME abecedary, fr. ML abecedarium alphabet, fr. LL,
neut. of abecedarius of the alphabet, fr. the letters a + b + c + d]
(1603): one learning the rudiments of something (as the alphabet).
