Hawaii Vacation
Diamond Head Volcano
Aug. 29, 2001
These are several views from the top of the Diamond Head volcano.
The hike up the inside of the volcano was a lot of fun and very rewarding
for those of us who made it. The observation station is at an elevation
of 761 feet and 360 of those feet are hiked up. The top pictures are
views to the west and the ocean. The middle row of pictures is to the
east with Waikiki in the distance. Here is also the picture I asked
some tourists to take of me so you all would know I made it to the top.
The bottom row of pictures is one of the second staircases leading to the
top. This set of stairs has 99 steps. The last photo on the right
is of the hillside just below where I had my picture taken. The little
blue lines point to hats that people lost to the wind. Diamond head
is an old military base. The observation station was built back in
1908-1910. It was used as a spotting station for huge artillery guns
used to defend Honolulu and Pearl Harbor.
