I was in Hawaii ho could I not visit the Dole Pineapple Plantation .  James Dole came to Hawaii in 1899 and started growing pineapple.  I had no idea they grew on the ground more like a bush.  It takes about a year and a half to grow a pineapple ready to harvest.  Each plant grows 2 or 3 fruits.  They are trimmed back so the plant concentrates on making fewer fruits, juicier and sweeter.  There were many different varieties of pineapple but the Smooth Cayanne Plantation Pineapple is the best for cultivation and taste so that is the main pineapple in commercial production.
