South West North East 1NT 2 2NT 3 ![]()

My error was I should have defined North's 2NT over 2
as "Think about it. Do the right thing." If 2
shows diamonds as in natural and DONT, then 2NT has to be invitational. If it is
artificial as in Hamilton and Woolsey, then it is bid the longer minor (and in case of tie bid clubs.) Lecture notes are corrected..
A second error was saying East has to bid spades twice to play spades. That is true only over 2
and 2
doubled. If North bids anything else, then double asks, and other bids are natural.
Notes corrected.
I asked Lew Stansby what 2NT meant in some auction. He thought and then gave a more general answer: "I don't think there is any auction where Chip and I can play 2NT."
