Chapter 3

April 27 Post Mortem

This was Board 3 of the play deals.  Dealer South and E-W vulnerable.  How does competition affect new minor forcing?

One player ranted about West's bid.  Whether or not you do it at the table is irrelevant.  The double created a discussion of whether new-minor forcing is on.  That is why we are here.  I assert it is on if new minor is available, and there has been only one bid.  (In our San Diego setting, the double of 1NT is takeout and not penalty.  In a nationals championship event, the double was the second or third defensive bid in the auction; we were bidding with about 19 high; we knew East-West were after us; and both of us forgot about new- (both-) minor forcing agreements.)

North certainly wants new-minor forcing, as three spades, the A-K, and A, would produce a grand slam.

I suggest South doubles 2 .  The message is "2 was my bid, and I would have been happy to make it."

What would redouble, instead of 2 , as North's first rebid mean?  I suggest the count for an invitational 2NT or better, and the possibility of a penalty double.
