Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort....Franklin D. Roosevelt

In Their Own Words

As part of a weekly writing grade, my students are reporting about class happenings every week. Below are some of the best written news stories.

Discovery of Analogies
for Word Master Words
by Kristen

Mrs. Reidlebach, our gifted resource teacher, came into our room to help us with the Word Master test coming up. She gave us a sheet that had 16 ways to compare words. Then we looked at the test from last time. By using the sheet she gave us, we found out how they were comparing the words. She told us that it would be easier if we found out how the maker of the test thinks. For homework, we had to make three analogies. 2 Word Master Words per each analogy. That lesson actually made me understand the concept of analogies.

Lovely Valentines Day
was a Special Event in Room 27
by Sage

Our Valentines were passed around on Feb.14. They were very lovely and we got to get sweet treats. I was full from all that candy. Still, I haven’t eaten it all yet. Anyway, it was an unforgettable event because, that’s the first time I ever had donuts on Valentines Day. The Valentines cards were cute. I passed around chocolate sweat hearts to everyone and with a letter in an envelope I made myself. With each passing year Valentines parties or thrills will get smaller and smaller. That was fun for 5th grade.

The Eggxact Experiment
                               by Megan

On Tuesday we did an egg activity. I didn’t really know why we were doing an experiment on eggs, but then when we were given the layers of the Earth sheet I understood. The egg was like the Earth. The crust or shell of the egg was like the crust of the Earth. The mantel was the white inside of the egg and the core was the yoke of the egg. I though it was a good way to learn the layers of the Earth.

Laptops in the Classroom!
By Halla

Today we are buzzing around from the excitement of yesterday. A big cart rolled in with lots of laptops! We were pretty excited to have laptops, even though we had to work with partners. We each got one computer per two people and we looked up answers for social studies questions about slavery. It was a lot more fun than taking notes with a paper and pencil. It was cool to work with them in the classroom because we usually only get them in the library. It was a great experience.

Word Analogies and Definitions
Filled the Room
By Hope

We had a Word Masters test on Friday. You really have to study. You need to know all the definitions. Then you have to find the connection between the words. After that you have to find the word or words that make the same connection.

Our Puzzling Pangaea Puzzle
By Sage

The Pangaea Puzzles were somewhat puzzling because many students couldn’t think of a combination of the continents wan wanted Mrs. Giles to show them hers. Still, other kids wanted to do it on their own and protested. Many of the puzzles were creative. Mrs. Giles says there could be many ways of making Pangaea.
The book about Pangaea and the Earth’s layers was cool, too because the pictures were fantastic. Especially the rock that looks like a tornado. That rock had been eroding and pieces of it had fallen off. It looked pretty cool. All the other pictures were cool, too.
