· Assessment in my class is an ongoing process. Students write daily in all subjects and frequently show understanding of subject matter by writing responses on a small dry erase board. · Assessment in math is done for every lesson, often using responses on dry erase boards, in math journals, and orally. Tests are given at the end of each unit. · Class work, projects, quizzes, and tests are used for grading in all subjects except math and each is weighted differently. · All students in Virginia Beach take end-of-quarter or semester tests in language arts, math, social studies, and science. Results are not graded, but used in data-driven decisions such as grouping and lesson planning. |

Independent Reading Students in our class are expected to read independently every day. They are given time to read silently in class daily and are assigned 20 minutes of reading for homework Monday through Thursday. Each student is given a reading level range to choose books from the thousands of Accelerated ReaderTM titles in our library. Computer tests are then taken to assist me in seeing how well the student is reading. Because I value the efforts students put toward improving their reading, a monthly grade is assigned based on each student’s reading level. As the year progresses, students are expected to read books from a variety of genres and difficulty levels. |
|
Independent Writing Students in our class are also expected to write independently in their own writer’s notebook. These notebooks will be graded with a rubric based on quality as well as the quantity of the writing. As the year progresses I expect the quality of the writing will as well. |
