According to Jewish teaching throughout the centuries the 22 letters of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet are more than mere letters. Each letter is a spiritual force and power coming from God that contain the raw material for Creation, translating His will into reality. Each letter is a unique power or force. When letters are combined they become Words, Sentences and Paragraphs. As Christians this concept helps us to understand more deeply the scripture in John 1: 1-3, which says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
Since the Word ranges from the Aleph (first letter) to the Tav (the last letter), it also broadens our understanding in Revelation 1:8, where Jesus says, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." The Greek letter Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last letter, thereby stating that Jesus Christ, the Word, not only is the first and the last, but all the letters in between! (For deeper insight into this specific topic, please see a wonderful study entitled ~ In the Beginning Was the Word!)
Likewise, as it states in John 1:1-3, as the Word, Jesus is also the Aleph and the Tav as well as the Alpha and the Omega. In Him exists all the spiritual powers and forces of creation. Not only are all things made by Him, but they are being held together by Him as revealed in Colossians 1:16 - 17, which says "For by him were all things created that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and for him: And he is before all things and by him all things consist."
In addition to each letter of the Aleph-Bet having a numerical value, it also has a meaning. These meanings are said to have come from antiquity through either the shape of the letter (in the ancient Hebrew), the sound it makes, or its numeric designation. These meanings have remained the same since antiquity.
The Hebrew Aleph-Bet consists of 22 Letters and 5 Finals. The 5 Finals of the Aleph-Bet are interesting
in their own right. It is said that when a word ends with a Final, the word has a prophetic significance relating
to the "end times." Judaism teaches that the initial 22 Letters of the Aleph-Bet are known as the "masculine
alphabet," or depth of the beginning/creation
~ corresponding to the masculine Wisdom.
When the 5 finals are included in the Aleph-Bet, making it 27 Letters, it is then considered the "female alphabet,"
or depth of the end (world to come) ~ corresponding
to the female Understanding. Adding an additional
(value ~ 1,000) at the end of the Finals to make it a complete circlet (beginning to end) makes the alphabet 28
Letters from beginning to end!
Hebrew is read and counted from Right to Left. Even the shapes of the Letters and their placement in the word are considered important. The Finals are located at the very end of a Hebrew word (to the far left side). Just remember, not all words have Finals.
