Central Control International is pleased to announce that Barry Adamson will be the Southbank Centre's Artist In Residence for their festivities as part of this year's London Jazz Festival.

"It's Jazz, son - but not as we know it." - Barry Adamson

In addition to the widely circulated information surrounding Barry Adamson's residency at the Southbank Centre here in London, we can now exclusively announce that two of his former collaborators in the bands Magazine, The Birthday Party and The Bad Seeds - in the form of Dave Formula and Nick Cave - will be joining Barry Adamson onstage at the Queen Elizabeth Hall this November. Further performance art and musical guests are still to be announced!

November 20 - Barry Adamson, plus support from the Matana Roberts Quartet

In this exclusive performance, Adamson premieres the entirety of his hotly anticipated new album with full band, as well as performing favourite tracks from his back catalogue. The new album, heavily influenced by jazz, soul and blues, is not due for release until 2008.

Support comes from saxophonist Matana Roberts and her Quartet, whose album The Chicago Project is to be released in early 2008 on Central Control. The album features bassist Josh Abrams (Town and Country, Prefuse 73), guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Chicago Underground Trio) and drummer Frank Rosaly (Ken Vandermark's Crisis Ensemble) - this is the dynamic line-up that will be performing live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Post show event at The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall: Eugene Robinson from Oxbow reads stories from his upcoming book Fight: Or, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Ass-Kicking But Were Afraid You'd Get Your Ass Kicked for Asking, accompanied by Barry Adamson, Ross Mason from Wonb and members of Strings of Consciousness. Post show is free admission to the general public.

November 21 - Barry Adamson "These Are A Few Of My Favourite Themes"

Renowned for his trademark sinful noir film scores, Adamson chooses a selection of his (own?) favourite soundtracks for this performance. Featuring special musical guests and unique performance collaborations, this evening promises to be an unforgettable experience. Having covered, reinterpreted and collaborated with artists as diverse as Elmer Bernstein, Archie Shepp, Serge Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra, Angelo Badalamenti, Monty Norman and Dusty Springfield, Adamson tries to give you a fair idea of what you can expect: the unexpected.

Post show event at The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall: Barry Adamson reads his published short-story Maida Hell (from the novel London Noir, published by Serpents Tail), accompanied by a unique soundtrack by Barry Adamson, augmented live with Matana Roberts and Pete Whyman on saxophones. Post show is free admission to the general public.

December, 2005:

Directly from Mr. Adamson:

"The great news is that I have a new album in the can!

Fifteen tracks have been recorded, with the first ten mixed by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Beth Orton, Athlete) and the last five being mixed (Victor) just after the holidays. I am thinking that twelve of the fifteen tracks will make the grand final, which will be ready for general release at the end of March/early April.

Until then, tracks will be able to be previewed at the end of January at the website, and then available for download or purchase at; www.barryadamson.com by those of you who have signed up (anyone reading this!) before it hits stores (I'm hoping this will be beginning of March.) Also, information such as the Title and the track-listing will be revealed at the first preview.

What's the album like? The people around me say I have extended myself. They say that vibe-wise, this is the natural successor to Oedipus Schmoedipus. This we will see.

Look out also at this time for tour dates."

Press Release:

Barry Adamson releases new album,
The King of Nothing Hill on August 20

Highly influential and critically acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, film composer, songwriter and vocalist Barry Adamson returns with a new album The King Of Nothing Hill on August 20, 2002 through Mute.

The follow up to 1999's "best of" collection, The Murky World Of Barry Adamson and the first new material since As Above So Below released in 1998, The King Of Nothing Hill features ten brand new tracks, all produced and performed by Adamson, and includes the forthcoming single "Black Amour."

Born and raised in Moss Side, Manchester, England, a love of cinematic scores and the punk explosion of the 1970s inexorably led Barry Adamson headlong into a career in music. He was the bass player in the innovatory post punk band, Magazine between 1978 and1982, then went on to become a founder member of Nick Cave's illustrious Bad Seeds in 1984.

Since 1988, with the release of his debut album, The Man With The Golden Arm Adamson has forged his own highly acclaimed solo career with a series of distinctive and thematically linked soundscape albums: Moss Side Story (1989), The Taming Of The Shrewd (1989), Delusion (1991) Soul Murder (1992), The Negro Inside Me (1993), Oedipus Schmoedipus (1996) and As Above So Below (1998). Barry Adamson has also written for numerous film soundtracks, most notably Derek Jarman's Last Of England’ in 1989 and David Lynch's Lost Highway’ from 1996.

The anguished songs and poignant instrumentals, all comprised of a miscellany of musical styles, are deftly blended together in Barry Adamson's hands on his new album, The King Of Nothing Hill, and the result is his own assiduously distinctive and deeply personal cinematic sound and his singular narrative gift.

"Black Amour" Video

The Revolver Film Co's newsletter page states " Floria Sigismondi has 2 new clips in the works.  The first is for Mute recording artist Barry Adamson.  Barry & Floria have collaborated together in the past & this new clip promises more of their same amazing chemistry.  The video for "Black Amour" was shot in Cuba and will be completed in the coming weeks."

"Motorlab #3"

Adamson has collaborated with Pan Sonic and The Hafler Trio for the Icelandic label Kitchen Motors.  The cd is out now.  A list of distributors and more info is available at Kitchen Motors with further info at Edda.

An excerpt from an interview with Pan Sonic from Release Magazine concerning the project:

"At the end of this tour, we are going to record something with a classical choir in Iceland. We've enlisted the help of Barry Adamson.  I don't know quite what will come of it, but it sounds interesting.  We certainly don't have any experience with this sort of thing, but then, Barry Adamson does. "

Soundtracking / Sheffield / UK / The Showroom Cinema / 23rd & 24th  November

Soundtracking, a celebration of connections between popular  music, continues for its third year two days of new films, digital  pop promos, gems from the archive, and music and film meltdowns in the bar. We are also very pleased to present discussions with two highly contrasting composer/musicians whose work on mainstream, independent films and other projects  has genuinely stretched and redefined the art of the cinema  soundtrack

7.00pm 23rd
MICHAEL KAMEN
Hugely prolific, multiple award-winning soundtrack composer whose vast body of work has moved effortlessly between high octane Hollywood (Die Hards and Lethal Weapons) and the independent visions of Terry Gilliam, David Cronenberg, Neil Jordan, Alan Clarke and others. Michael Kamen will discuss his career in conversation. He will then be introducing one of his best  loved works – Terry Gilliam’s 1985 masterpiece BRAZIL.

6.30 24th
BARRY ADAMSON
Originally bass player for Magazine and The Bad Seeds, before he pursued a solo career of  soundtracks for imaginary films.  Fusing a love of John Barry and film noir with the furthest reachest of pop’s avant-garde, Adamson has written and performed music for Alison Anders’ Gas Food Lodging, and David Lynch on Lost Highway. Adamson will discuss his love of film music in both areas of his musical career and explore how a film music fan became a film composer.

This event is an ideal opportunity to hear two very experienced  musicians discuss their work in film, television and beyond.

According to Mute USA Adamson has done work on a soundtrack for the French film "La Nature Morte D'un Flic" (Still Life of a Cop).

A new version of  "Red Right Hand" by Adamson and Nick Cave is featured in the movie "Scream 3".  Adamson contributed "Richard, It's Business as Usual" to the soundtrack for "The Beach".

"The Murky World of Barry Adamson"

On May 18, 2000 Mute Records released this "greatest-hits" album which features tracks from each of his albums as well as three previously unreleased songs: "Walk The Last Mile", "Mitch And Andy" and "Saturn in the Summertime."

A split 7" with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion entitled "Crime Scene" (on the Slut Smalls label) is out now.  I bought my copy from Action Records in the UK.
