The latest Damage Manual release, limited to 250 copies and now available to order (with t-shirt) from Underground, Inc. Martin Atkins had this to say about it on July 15, 2006: "I was trawling through the archives here over the last few months and sandwiched in-between regular mixes etc I found my stress relieving dubs from the Damage Manual sessions. Some of them are awesome, kool drops, great low end and noodling with tape delays, feedback loops, eq sweeps and spring reverb drops........that nice warm fuzzy feeling of cocoon like trance while your favorite re-cogniseable tunes are dismantled and put back together in little bits.............a nice tightrope walk between analog and digital! These are the moments where i just said fuck it, fired up all of my toys and hypnotized myself for a while. I'm pleased I found them! We're just dubbing off 250 so i'll sign and number them and put them together with the supercool new damage shirt for ya!!"The Damage Manual have contributed a cover of "Memories" to this Public Image Limited tribute released May 31, 2005 by Underground, Inc. “The Religion of Marketing” is a gallery retrospective put together by Martin Atkins.
Martin Atkins has spent the last 30 years firmly left of center – performing with seminal bands Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails. He formed industrial supergroup Pigface, The Damage Manual, the post-punk Brian Brain and has had his own label, Invisible, for close to 20 years.
Atkins has moved into the world of publishing with a new column for Suicide Girls, and his book Tour:Smart, hits the shelves this Spring. When not teaching at Columbia College Chicago, Atkins guest lectures throughout the world, most recently taking a trip to China where he signed and recorded several bands, filmed a documentary, and created a traditional instrument and scratch DJ hybrid that has already been featured on NPR.
It seems a fitting time to assemble some of his more visual work for a retrospective through his gallery exhibit, “The Religion of Marketing.”
Gallery Runs through May 29th, 2007
Location: 1915 S. Halsted Ave. Chicago, IL
Hours are Thursday-Friday 2pm-10pm
Saturday 12pm-10pm
Sundays by appointment only
THE COLLECTIONHis first gallery show “The Religion of Marketing” is very closely tied to his musical output and ranges from the massive to the minutia - the Mickey Mouse watch he used to generate some of the sounds on Public Image Ltd.’s Flowers of Romance album, and his 1980 diary with the matter-of-factly documented appearance on American Bandstand. The 15 foot high dollar bill backdrops from Killing Joke’s 1989 tour, “Money Is Not Our God,” underpin the memorabilia side and sign post the way forward to larger pieces using repetition of multiple images.
The next several years see him bouncing from small sculptures dealing with addiction to religious iconography. The pieces get larger, less smelly, and easier to cut up as time goes by. The Eye piece is 20 feet high and weirdly also available as limited edition print on perforated blotter acid sheets. A small 12” x 16” sculpture, created during his first weeks sober became part of an extensive work documented in the booklet for Pigface’s 1994 album, Notes from thee Underground. This work, in turn, spawned a stage set covered in dot-screened Newcastle Brown Ale bottle caps in front of which Pigface performed with special guest Danny Carey from TOOL.
Throw into this some pieces designed for Test Department’s only North America tour, a collection of hand screened Sheep on Drugs posters, a limited edition red vinyl 7” of music from China wrapped in posters from the Cultural Revolution and you almost forget this guy has a collection of post-punk photographs worthy of a show in their own right. (and yes, some of those will be shown too!)
The gallery affords the luxury of showing the 12 foot tall pieces in their entirety. Some of this is not for sale, some of it is, the entrepreneurial spirit behind everything Martin has done provides 24” x 17” easy to carry portions of these works to take home – “memorabilia for the masses.”
Several events are already planned. The gallery will play host to two evenings dedicated to presentations on the China music scene, as well as the launch party for Martin’s book, Tour:Smart. Some limited seating/sign up events are also planned where, having opened up some of his visual archives, Martin will be around to chat and open up some pieces of his brain. Check the gallery schedule for special events.
This amalgam of art and memorabilia will be available for viewing with a launch party on May 11th at 1915 S. Halsted and also by appointment outside of gallery hours. Presented by the Chicago Arts District.
Various parties and workshops are planned. For more details on what is sure to be an interesting experience keep your eye on this page or www.undergroundinc.com.
2008 show dates:

4 - Darkroom - Chicago, IL (9 pm, $5, with Thanatos and Tim Larson)
The new album "Forgiveness & Exile" was recorded over a weekend in late September and mixed in November of 2007. It will be released in the spring of 2008 by Jnana Durtro. The album features the same band and producers as the previous album, "The Episodes", plus guests David Tibet (Current 93), Shirley Manson (Garbage), David Miller (Finitribe) and actress Torri Higginson.
Connelly posted to the Converse With Chris board on July 15, 2006: "A lot has been happening in my little world, the biggest news is that Shayna and I are having a baby, October 10th is the due date, and it's a boy, needless to say, I am thrilled and will be devoting my time to the wee one, that's not to say there won't be any new music forthcoming, there probably won't be any tours, and not so many local appearances, but definitely some."
Connelly has finished a book on the Chicago industrial-music scene entitled "Concrete, Bulletproof, Invisible & Fried" due in October, 2007 from SAF Publishing. For more information see the 9/1/06 Chicago Reader interview ...

Here's what Chris had to say about it:"I have some more info on "Initials CC volume 2"-right now I am about halfway done mixing the material with my friend Dave Collins engineering/producing-it's a collection of 14 tracks from 94 to 2001, none of which has been available before anywhere-there are live selections sourced from three different live shows from 96/98 -one show with THE BELLS-there are 2 demos from Shipwreck with the shipwreck band, some demos for PRIVATE EDUCATION and some for NIGHT OF YOUR LIFE -4 songs that have never been re recorded anywhere-best of all might be the demo for "The early nighters" which I found by accident recently, it's very eerie...oh, and there is a cover version of a folk song called "fire & wine". I can't say exactly when it's going to be available, but probably November, and it's not going to be in the stores, just from here and gigs, it will not be a cDR, it's a real silver cD, with a pretty picture. I was really excited when we were working on it the other day, it's almost like a missing link record, more cohesive because it covers a shorter period, and, thanks to Dave's skills in the studio, it sounds really good...."

Their self-titled debut was released February 10, 2004 by Chicago's Brilliante Records. Connelly says of the project "it's unlike anything I have ever done, very melodic and focusing on extremely complex structures that perhaps appear like antistructures, I would hold this up against 'Largo' in certain respects, with emphasis on guitars rather than piano..."
Miscellaneous: Connelly opened for VooDou in February and toured with Pigface March-April of 2003. Chris Connelly.com may in the future release a 2 CD DAT soundboard recording culled from the Phenobarb Bambalam tour of 1992. The full set is present, including songs from "Whiplash Boychild" and "Phenobarb Bambablam" and covers of John Cale's "Chicken Shit", Alice Cooper's "Desperado" and Neil Young's "Fuckin' Up". The band included Martin Atkins on drums. The latest Pigface album "Difficult Listening For Easy Fuckheads" features 2 tracks with vocals by Connelly. And according to the Shock of Point 6 site, Connelly will appear on Hammer Head Housewife's "NuAge Depression", a new project by Groovie Mann of The Thrill Kill Kult. However, don't let that stop you, the tour will be highly entertaining without me, and I am very proud of my contribution to the new album, I think that stands on it's own amid it's regal blackness...."

Martin Atkins - drumsA message from Martin Atkins on the Underground, Inc. site:
May 14, 2004 - We regret to announce that all of the dates other than the June 11th Chicago show for The Damage Manual have been cancelled. Words from Martin Atkins:
Usually, I'd refrain from going into much personal detail about all of this - but the Damage Manual has become very important to myself & mine and Chris's new band mates alike - and, having had problems in the past with visas etc causing cancellation of the very first tour, I thought it best to let you know exactly what is going on - I hope the Damage Manual has become important to you too. I am currently in the UK where my dad has had a fairly serious stroke, whilst traveling backwards and forwards to the UK I missed the first rehearsals with new bassist Greta, anyhow, also whilst here for the second time in a week, I learned that my wife, 7 months pregnant, had experienced contractions 5 mins apart. Having missed the birth of my second son Harrison (he was born 6 weeks early while I was mixing a Pigface album) as a husband and father, I cannot risk this again, nor the stress on my family of me being away. The original due date was July 30th so we originally thought that we were on safe ground - the one thing you learn as a parent is that nothing should be taken for granted!
We are trying to continue with the Chicago show, stay tuned for details on that and a triumphant, glorious Damage Manual tour later in the year.

A Message from Martin Atkins - e-mail, Oct. 17, 2000
"Just to let you know, we had the first full rehearsal last night with Charles Levi on bass and although the question you all seem to have is "What's up with Wobble?"
I got a surprising answer to the questions in my own head last night.
First off, I don't think that anyone could feel the loss of Jah Wobble more strongly than I. Wobble was the first call that I made when I decided to put this new band together and as you surely must know, Wobble and I worked together almost 20 years ago when PiL was a groundbreaking force to be reckoned with. But last night's rehearsal transcended the question, "What's going on with the 'bass'?" and Charles Levi's precise, fat bass lines underpinned the songs and had me marveling at the tones coming from Geordie's guitar and the groove/mesh between us all.
From what I've seen on the Web, so far, this is shaking out to be some kind of "who did what, what's going on, winners, losers, blah blah blah" scenario. And I tell you, last night, it was the songs that triumphed. I am more excited than I've ever been about this band and the possibilities that are before us. Take that for what you think it's worth. What the fuck do I know? Whether you decide to come or not, is of course, up to you but Charles, Lee, Chris, Geordie and myself will be"
30 Hertz Press Release - Oct. 14, 2000
We are informed that Jah Wobble features on posters and publicity for the forthcoming Damage Manual shows. This concerns us as, several weeks ago, Jah Wobble specifically stated to Martin Atkins at Invisible Records that he would under no circumstances be touring with Damage Manual at any time. He also told Martin that his name (Jah Wobble ) was not to be used in publicity for any forthcoming shows. This was fully understood and acknowledged by Invisible Records. We hope that this mistake will be rectified. In the meantine Jah Wobble continues his schedule of work, including the re-release of the William Blake album, selected dates to promote this along with a feature on a november edition of Omnibus, further promotion for the landmark Molam Dub CD, live dates for Deep Space, and compiling the forthcoming Evan Parker/Jah Wobble release on 30 Hertz Records.
June / July North American tour cancelled
Official press release from Invisible Records:
IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS POSTPONE TOUR
MEG LEE CHIN TO SUPPORT MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT
June 15, 2000 The first U.S. tour by the new rock super power The Damage Manual has been postponed until the fall.
The tour to promote their debut CD "1" was to have run June 13-July 3, and featured fellow Invisible Records artists Meg Lee Chin and Not Breathing. The Damage Manual will be back for a full US tour (including stops in Canada) in October. In fact, the band has decided to drastically shorten a 3 month European tour to return and play shows in North America.
This unfortunate postponement was due to continued processing delays of the band and crews' US visas. This problem originated within the immigration system itself and, in fact, has recently effected numerous other touring bands including The Eurythmics. It's a most regretable situation for all involved, and Invisible Records extends it's sincere regret to all of the fans, media, radio personel, retailers and everyone else that worked so enthusiastically to make this tour happen. We will be back in October! In the meantime, Invisible Records is pleased to announce that Meg Lee Chin will support My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult on that band's month-long American tour scheduled to begin July 8th in Seattle. Check www.invisiblerecords.com for updates. In the fall, The Damage Manual will be touring in support of their first full length CD, tentatively titled Music To Be Murdered By , which features mixes by Bill Laswell and Alex Patterson of The Orb among others. Street date for Music To Be Murdered By is September 5, 2000. In the meantime, "1" is garnering strong radio airplay and press, and - in the wake of a series of shows in the UK earlier this month which brought rave reviews from the media - the band is beginning to receive national and international acclaim for their powerful studio recordings and stunning live work. The Damage Manual will continue to play in Europe in the coming months with a number of headlining gigs and festival appearances until their return Stateside in the fall.
