"Untitled Gehenna Project" aka "Ice 41"

Rollins plays a priest.  From the Hollywood Reporter:  "Cuba Gooding Jr., Taryn Manning, Ron Perlman, Henry Rollins, Valerie Cruz and Ray Winstone are starring in the action thriller "Untitled Gehenna Project."  Sean Connery's son, Jason Connery, is directing the tale of an elite group of soldiers (Gooding, Manning, Jason London, Franky G, Zack Ward, Stephanie Jacobson and Brandon Fobbs) sent on a covert mission by a government agent (Cruz) to retrieve a missing scientist (Perlman) from an underground lab.
They encounter a priest (Rollins) who tells them that an "ancient evil" has been released, causing their greatest fears to come to life. Their former leader (Winstone) plays a pivotal role in uncovering what is actually taking place at the facility. Bill Moseley and Sarah Ann Morris play members of the compromised research team.  Former Universal Pictures head Sid Sheinberg, his sons Jon and Bill Sheinberg (Slappy and the Stinkers) and Steve Harris are producing the film from a screenplay by Keith Kjornes."

"Gang of Souls:  A Generation of Beat Poets"

Released on DVD March 18, 2008 by MVD Visual.  "GANG OF SOULS (1989) is Maria Beatty's engaging documentary exploring the insights and influences of the American Beat Poets. The film conveys their consciousness and sensibility through candid interviews with William Burroughs Allen Ginsberg Diane Di Prima among others. Designed as a tribute to them and to their spirit of artistic freedom Gang of Souls also weaves in additional commentary from contemporary musicians poets and writers such as Marianne Faithfull Richard Hell Lydia Lunch and Henry Rollins. The film seeks to truly capture the magic of the Beat generation and it's continuing legacy. It brilliantly expands upon how the poets reached new levels of creativity and inspired unprecedented social change."

"Public Enemy: Welcome to The Terrordome"

The DVD, which does not yet have a release date, will include the group's Friday performance at the South by Southwest festival, in addition to other concert highlights, according to MTV."  Trailer here.

"Ramones - Too Tough to Die: A Tribute to Johnny Ramone"

"On September 12, 2004, just two-and-a-half days before Johnny Ramone's death, a group of musicians and friends-among them Henry Rollins, Deborah Harry, The Dickies, X, Eddie Vedder, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers-staged a benefit concert to celebrate The Ramones' 30th anniversary and to raise money for cancer research. Mandy Stein's touching rockumentary captures that unforgettable evening."

"The Maltese Falcon:  Three-Disc Special Edition"

Rollins is one of the interviewees in the 32-minute documentary on disc 3, “The Maltese Falcon: One Magnificent Bird".  Reviews:  The DVD Journal, DVD Movie Guide, DVD Times, Film Threat

Still the tightest, sharpest, and most cynical of Hollywood's official deathless classics, bracingly tough even by post-Tarantino standards. Humphrey Bogart is Dashiell Hammett's definitive private eye, Sam Spade, struggling to keep his hard-boiled cool as the double-crosses pile up around his ankles. The plot, which dances all around the stolen Middle Eastern statuette of the title, is too baroque to try to follow, and it doesn't make a bit of difference. The dialogue, much of it lifted straight from Hammett, is delivered with whip-crack speed and sneering ferocity, as Bogie faces off against Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, fends off the duplicitous advances of Mary Astor, and roughs up a cringing "gunsel" played by Elisha Cook Jr. It's an action movie of sorts, at least by implication: the characters always seem keyed up, right on the verge of erupting into violence. This is a turning-point picture in several respects: John Huston (The African Queen) made his directorial debut here in 1941, and Bogart, who had mostly played bad guys, was a last-minute substitution for George Raft, who must have been kicking himself for years afterward. This is the role that made Bogart a star and established his trend-setting (and still influential) antihero persona. --David Chute

On the DVD
This handsome transfer of John Huston's 1941 masterpiece gets the usual mix of bonus features, with a couple of major additions: the two previous film versions of Dashiell Hammett's landmark detective novel. Neither gets it right, although both are fun examples of everyday Warner Bros. fare. The 1931 Maltese Falcon, starring Ricardo Cortez as gumshoe Sam Spade, has plenty of cheek but precious little magic--although it's fascinating to hear some of the same verbatim Hammett dialogue later enshrined in Huston's classic. The 1936 Satan Met a Lady pitches the story as a screwball comedy, with Warren William and Bette Davis playing it as though they wandered in from a Thin Man picture.

Other goodies include a historically minded commentary track from Bogart biographer Eric Lax. Three different radio versions of the Falcon are here, two starring Bogart and one with Edward G. Robinson, and a useful half-hour documentary, The Maltese Falcon: One Magnificent Bird. Turner Classics host Robert Osborne presents a fun 44 minutes' worth of Bogie coming-attractions trailers. An uncensored collection of bloopers, Breakdowns of 1941, has some hysterical gaffes. Shorts include two Oscar nominees: the cartoon "Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt," with Bugs Bunny intruding on the famous poem; and "The Gay Parisian," a colorful and historically valuable performance by the fabled Ballets Russe de Monte Carlo. (Although what Sam Spade would've thought of such a thing can only be imagined.) A humorous cartoon war-effort short, "Meet John Doughboy," gives good flavor of the mood of the era. --Robert Horton

"Humphrey Bogart: The Signature Collection Volume 2"

Rollins is one of the interviewees in the extras of this 7 disc DVD collection:

"Humphrey Bogart: The Signature Collection Volume 2" ($59.92, Warner Bros.) is a chance to see five of his films for the first time on DVD: "The Maltese Falcon," "Across the Pacific," "Action in the North Atlantic," "All Through the Night" and "Passage to Marseille."

The seven-disc set is loaded with extras. Each movie has a "Warner Night at the Movies" short subjects gallery that features classic cartoons, vintage newsreel footage and movie trailers. Each film also has a new featurette such as "Hollywood Helps the Cause" and "Credit Where Credit Is Due." For "Call the Usual Suspects: The Craft of the Character Actor," modern character actors such as Paul Dooley, Clint Howard and Edie McClurg chime in with their thoughts.

The crowning glory for this set, however, is the three discs devoted to the great detective movie often called the first film noir, "The Maltese Falcon."

Included are the three divergent takes on the Dashielle Hammett classic: the 1931 version that depicted Sam Spade as a cheerful ladies' man; the 1936 Bette Davis film called "Satan Met a Lady" that had a grinning gumshoe and a comic bent; and the primo 1941 movie that filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich calls "the first great detective picture" in the bonus features. (The "Maltese Falcon" material is also available separately as a three-disc set selling for $29.95).

Among others heard from in the extras are punk music icon Henry Rollins, screenwriter Larry Cohen, actor James Cromwell and comic auteur Frank Miller, who says Bogart "could scare the crap out of you and then go all puppy-eyed."

Julie Rivett, Hammett's granddaughter, shares personal details such as how her grandfather was taught the "code of the detective" - putting a barrier between yourself and the world - while he was a Pinkerton guard. It was a trait he infused within himself and his famous literary creation, detective Sam Spade.

"The Ghost On the Highway:  The Gun Club"

"It’s about time the Gun Club get the major reevaluation they deserve. Director Kurt Voss (BORDER RADIO) interviews Gun Club members Kid Congo Powers, Terry Graham and Ward Dotson, and members of rival bands like Blaster Dave Alvin, X’s John Doe and Henry Rollins weigh in with memories of the Club’s volatile frontman, the dear, departed and mildly deranged Jeffrey Lee Pierce. A disaster waiting to happen, he still managed to produce such fractured greats as Fire of Love and Miami — but his confrontational nature drove everyone he knew crazy. He constantly battled severe health and addiction problems and finally died of a brain hemorrhage in 1996."

Screenings:

10/7 - Montreal, QB - Associaçao Portuguesa (7 pm)

"Wrong Turn 2"

Released 2007, the sequel to the 2003 horror film (which starred Eliza Dushku).  Rollins' character is Dale Murphy, host of a reality TV show called "The Ultimate Survivalist", and he and the contestants find out unexpectedly that they have to survive a family of backwoods cannibals.

The DVD will be released October 9, 2007.  From the 7/5/07 Fangoria article:  "One of the most fun guests at Fango’s recent Weekend of Horrors in New Jersey was Joe Lynch, the diehard horror fan who makes his feature directorial debut with the much-anticipated DVD sequel WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END. At the show, he gave us the scoop about what we can expect on the disc, coming “between October 8 and October 10” (per Fox Home Entertainment’s instructions to Lynch on how to discuss the street date). “It’s not absolutely 100 percent confirmed, just because they’re processing it all now,” he tells us, “but the unbelievably unrated version of the DVD—I tried to get ‘Unbelievably’ on there, but it wouldn’t fit on the cover—boasts three commentaries: one by the writers [Turi Meyer and Al Septien], one by me and actors Henry Rollins and Erica Leerhsen and a more technical, very geeky one by myself. There are, I believe, four separate documentaries, and two or three Easter eggs floating around."

"Punk's Not Dead"

Rollins is one of many interviewees in this documentary.  Trailers on the official site here and YouTube here.

"On the edge of the 30th anniversary of punk rock, Punk's Not Dead takes you into the sweaty underground clubs, backyard parties, recording studios, and yes, shopping malls and stadium shows where punk rock music and culture continue to thrive.

Thirty years after bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols infamously shocked the system with their hard, fast, status-quo-killing rock, the longest-running punk band in history is drawing bigger crowds than ever, “pop-punk” bands have found success on MTV, and kids too young to drive are forming bands that carry the torch for punk's raw, immediate sound. Meanwhile, “punk” has become a marketing concept to sell everything from cars to vodka, and dyed hair and piercings mark a rite of passage for thousands of kids. Can the true, nonconformist punk spirit still exist in today's corporatized culture?

Featuring interviews, performances, and behind-the-scenes journeys with the bands, labels, fans, and press who keep punk alive, Punk's Not Dead dares to juxtapose pop-punk's music and lifestyle against the roots in the 70s and 80s, resulting in unexpected revelations.

A DIY search for the soul of a subculture and a celebration of all things loud, fast, and spiked, Punk's Not Dead shows punk is stronger and more relevant today than it's ever been."

"Vinerepylenoma"

Features Black Flag live footage and interview footage with Rollins.  Trailer here"Vinerepylenoma is a feature length documentary currently in production which revisits the underground music scene of Los Angeles during the 1980's. It celebrates the raw energy of an era often forgotten and very poorly documented."

"American Hardcore"

Features Black Flag and S.O.A. amongst a long list of other bands, including:  Bad Brains, Flipper, Minor Threat, The Minutemen, The Misfits, The Nig-Heist and The Teen Idles.  Rotten Tomatoes review.  Trailer here.  Opened in theaters (New York & Los Angeles) on September 22, 2006 and to be released on DVD on February 20, 2007.

"Generally unheralded at the time, the early-80s Hardcore Punk Rock scene gave birth to much of the rock music and culture that followed. There would be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for Hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat.

Hardcore was more than music - it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. The participants constituted a tribe unto themselves - some finding a voice, others an escape in the hard-edged music; some sought a better world, others were just angry and wanted to raise hell.

AMERICAN HARDCORE traces this lost subculture, from its early roots to its extinction."

"A House On the Hill"

Rollins plays the assistant architect to the lead character.  The film has been making the film festival rounds including SXSW2001.  The trailer is available here.  Reviews:  Chicago Sun-Times   Filethirteen.

(U.S., 2000, 89 min.): Director/Screenplay/Editor:  Chuck Workman;  Producers:  Ronald Colby, Chuck Workman; Cinematographer:  Ted Cohen; Cast:  Philip Baker Hall, Laura San Giacomo, Shirley Knight, Rebecca Staab, Henry Rollins

Philip Baker Hall plays Harry, an irascible, aging architect trying to achieve the dream of building his masterwork. In Chuck Workman's affecting film, a wealthy young couple has commissioned Harry to design and rebuild a house he once owned that had burned down. Though reluctant at first, he eventually takes on the assignment and develops a new sense of purpose when his ex-wife (Shirley Knight) gives him her blessing. Harry soon realizes that the work has tapped into the vigor and promise of his youth. In the meantime Gaby (Laura San Giacomo) has been hired to make a documentary about Harry--her project helps to reveal a complex man who, because of personal tragedy, has never attained the greatness most people felt he was destined for. Workman (whose film The Source was a TTPix 1999 favorite) brings an architect's eye to each scene with his framing and direction, and especially with his dynamic editing style. Full of irony, heartbreak, and personal frustrations, this is a film as much about the re-creation of a life as it is about the construction of a house. Preceded by the animated skid-row portrait Thought Bubble (d. Billy Greene, U.S., 2000, 4 min.).

"Desperate But Not Serious"

Rollins plays a psycho bartender. The film, an upcoming low- budget by Bill Fishman (Tapeheads) stars Christine Taylor (Marcia of the Brady Bunch movies), Pagel Brewster and 'super model' Claudia Schiffer.

"Live Freaky, Die Freaky"

Rollins plays a judge. It's a satirical movie based on the "Helter Skelter" Manson Family murders and those who were involved.  Others involved include Donita Sparks of L7 as Tate, Exene Cervenka as Susan Atkins, Viggo Mortensen as Charles Manson, Ann Magnuson as "Squeaky" Fromme, Joey Ramone as victim Steve Parent, Keith Morris of The Circle Jerks as "Tex" Watson, Matt Freeman of Rancid as Leno LaBianca and Tim Armstrong of Rancid as the narrator.  It also feature original music by Sparks and Cervenka, a score by J. Zombie of White Zombie and contributions from Los Angeles bands Woodpussy, Sluts for Hire and Stone Fox.

"It's an anti- religion film," says independent director John Roecker, who co-owns the Silver Lake, California oddity store "You've Got Bad Taste" with Cervenka.  "I'm showing that the bible, too, has been misinterpreted.  I don't think religion should be used as another instrument to control people.  And this is definitely not pro-Manson.  Charles wasn't a cool person.  But he's a product of society and we created him."

Roecker says the story is set in a post- nuclear war world, 100 years after the Manson murders.  When a group of desert nomads find the book Helter Skelter by Manson chief prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, they assume Manson is the Messiah.  As one of the characters reads the book, he replays in his mind all the sordid events and aforementioned characters.

The low-budget Charles Manson... is making use of bright-eyed homemade dolls, a Sony video camcorder for stop-motion, and DAT-recorded voices.  Roecker says the film will be completed in six months, and has hopes it will travel to independent film festivals.  Presently he is looking for a distributor.

"Morgan's Ferry"

"Reality 86'd"

Markey says "My film will never be released thanks to Greg Ginn".  Visit We Got Power Films site for more info.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents:

Reality 86’d by Dave Markey
Dave Markey in person
Friday, September 24, 8 pm and 9:45 pm
Tickets:  $6; $3 students, seniors

Tonight we present the Bay Area premiere of Reality 86'd , a road documentary of Black Flag's final US tour in 1986, by Dave Markey, director of the cult classics Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and 1991:  The Year Punk Broke.  Reality 86’d remains unreleased because of conflicts with original band members, and it accurately captures the demise of this once powerful and mighty punk band.  Also featured are Gone and Painted Willie.  Markey will also screen a selection of his music videos.  (1986, approx. 90 min., Super 8 on video)

A road documentary shot from the inside of the last Black Flag tour (the 1986 "In My Head" six month US tour). In 1980's America, nobody toured as relentlessly and ferociously as the Flag did. They looped the country countless times, bringing along their own massive PA system and opening bands, deeply and thanklessly influencing a generation. Greg Ginn, Henry Rollins, Cel Revulta, and Anthony Martinez comprise the final line up of the band, in this unreleased, extremely rare film. Filmmaker Dave Markey (1991 The Year Punk Broke, Desperate Teenage Lovedolls) was along for the entire trip, as the drummer of opening band Painted Willie. "Freaked"

Rollins did the theme song for this movie which featured Brooke Shields, Randy Quaid and Mr. T.  The DVD will be released July 12, 2005 by Anchor Bay Entertainment.  Trailer here and title sequence (featuring theme song by Rollins) here.  "Alex Winter (of BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE) stars as Ricky Coogin, an arrogant former child star who becomes the celebrity spokesman for toxic fertilizer Zygrot-24. But when Ricky is taken prisoner by demented sideshow impresario Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid), he is transformed into a hideous mutant freak to join the likes of The Bearded Lady (Mr. T), Sockhead (Bobcat Goldthwait), a human worm, a giant nose, and their fearless leader, Ortiz The Dog Boy (an uncredited — and unforgettable — performance by Keanu Reeves). Can a hack actor-turned-genetic nightmare now survive an evil conspiracy of corporate sleazebags, desperate milkmen, Rastafarian eyeballs, canned cheese and most horrifying of all, Brooke Shields? It’s time to get FREAKED!"
