Rollins Band status - 8/1/06

Rollins Band opened for the legendary Los Angeles band X on the "As the World Burns Tour" from late July through late August of 2006.  Rollins had the following to say about the tour (from the press release):  "Not since 1997 have we played together, so it's a big deal to us. We are very excited to be back together and to be out playing in America this summer," says the band's frontman and namesake HENRY ROLLINS. "The band is really sounding great. I can't wait to get out there." and "We have been working hard at band practice getting a good set of songs together," says HENRY. "[We] are looking forward to playing dates with X -- one of the greatest live bands of all time."

Rollins said the following in his 3/29/06 dispatch:  "The band. Yes. It’s Melvin Gibbs on bass, Chris Haskett on guitar, Sim Cain on drums and Theo Van Rock on sound. Actually we have been practicing on and off for months now, slowly getting it together. Today I went in and they were playing Shame when I got there. Today I did Black and White, Volume 4, Civilized, Divine Object Of Hatred, Alien Blueprint, Disconnect. It was all I had time for before I had to sprint to the hotel.  So, we are back together and are planning on getting some shows in by August. Nothing is booked yet. We have contacted all the agents are seeing what’s available. It’s been really cool being back in the practice room with these guys after all these years. I had a meeting with Theo the other night in Amsterdam for about an hour after the show and he’s in 100%. I am looking forward to getting more practices happening."

The band are currently practicing the following songs in New York City:  Also Ran, Civilized, Almost Real, Stray, Shine, Black and White, 1000 Times Blind, You Didn’t Need, Low Self Opinion, Almost Real, Divine Object of Hatred, Fool, Volume 4, Alien Blueprint, Disconnect and Burned Beyond Recognition.  Rollins says "We should have Shame, Starve, Cage, Obscene, and some others tight by May. It was great to be back in the room with these guys again. Road Manager Mike came by to check it out as well. It will be good to go by late July for sure."

We'll be putting this music out at a good price so those inclined to check it out won't be overly put out. I'll get show and track listing information on this one as soon as I get it all put together."

Taking advantage of the relatively new medium of CD, I stuck on a bunch of live stuff from the tour along with the studio tracks and put it out as a CD EP. Henry Rollins & Mother Superior “Get Some Go Again Sessions” 2xCD

Available now at 2.13.61 and to be released in stores 4/12.  Rollins says “It was 1998, I was bandless and producing a local Los Angeles band called Mother Superior. Great guys, great band. They get it done and move onto the next thing. My kind of people. I had some song ideas but no band to work on them with so I asked them if they would help and they generously offered their services. We got together and wrote some songs the first night. A few days later, we had more songs. Eventually, over two sessions we ended up with a lot of songs. In 1999 we went out and played a bunch of shows all over the world and had a blast. In 2000 we released some of these songs as the Get Some Go Again album. This is all the songs we recorded in this period plus two live tracks from a show in Los Angeles at the Troubadour that were on a promo CD. Having Brother Wayne Kramer and Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham guest on our record was huge and we thank them. Jim, Marcus, Jason and I worked hard, played hard and had a good time rockin’ out. It was so great to work with people who had such enthusiasm and a will to get it on and not just get on with it. There’s a big difference. The liner notes:

"On February 10, 1991, we loaded into Graphic, a small studio in New Jersey and set up. Theo put the mics up and rolled tape. We played the set of new songs like we had been doing in Andrew’s basement every day. Everything was pretty much one take. Vocals were all done on the spot. "Blues Jam" was just that, a simple jam we just did and refined later and put on the End of Silence album recorded in October of the same year.

A few overdubs were done in the following days at Andrew’s house and the songs were mixed onto a cassette and that was that. It was soon forgotten. The tapes sat at Andrew’s for awhile and then made their way out to my place where they sat some more.

I had been thinking about the session at one point, wondering about the quality of the music and the sound, I became curious. I asked ace producer, engineer, mixer of our last several albums, Clif Norrell if he would be interested in giving the tapes a mix. He had time and inclination and after a bit of searching, we located a 1" 16-track machine and loaded it into studio 3 at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood, the place where we have recorded a lot of material as of late. The tapes had to be baked to keep them from shedding on playback. That being done, the tracks were loaded into a Radar 24 digital system and mixing began.

I didn’t know what to expect. I reckoned if it sucked we could leave it alone. After Clif got some sounds up on the track "Low Self Opinion" I was surprised at how good it sounded and the energy of the playing. Damn, those guys are good. There’s never been a sound like Andrew’s. Sim is on fire and Chris’ playing is furious and brilliant and of course, no one could ever capture their sound as well as Theo. What a band. Things popped up that I had forgotten. One morning when Clif was starting the mix on "Almost Real," he asked about the saxophone track on the song. Saxophone? Oh yeah! Sim’s brother Mark sometimes played with us at shows. He came in and put some horn on the track. Sounds damn cool and it’s great to have him on a track with us. A few days later, the mixes were all in and I thought they sounded strong.

There’s a song on this collection called "Human," which was tracked in the studio only once, played a few times live and then dropped out of the set for good.

So why put these tracks out? I figure those who are interested will really get off on a good piece of work that’s not some lame knock-off. The songs and the playing stand up. We worked very hard on this stuff. Songwriting wasn’t always an easy process for us. There were five very opinionated people in the band and that makes for a sometimes tense working atmosphere, to say the least. The songs contained in this set are a good look back at those times and an acknowledgement of the extreme level of everyone’s dedication and considerable effort. Some of the finest people I have ever had the good luck to work with. What a monster band this was.

So, hopefully you will enjoy this ancient blast from the past."

Rollins:  "I became aware of the case like many people, from watching the 'Paradise Lost' documentaries that HBO released.  The first one shocked me and made me upset.  The second one made me mad.  Damien, Jessie, and Jason were found guilty of murdering three boys and sent to prison.  I didn't agree with the verdict. I figured that to do nothing about that would be to align myself with the forces of injustice that got them pulled into this horrible situation."

"I could send a check to aid in the boys' defense," Rollins said.  "That's nice, but it's pretty quiet and I thought what this situation needed was volume and motion.  I tried to think of things to do, and it always came back to a benefit record.  Benefit records are well meant but anonymous and boring to me.  Great idea, but I'm too busy, I thought.  Then I thought about the ages of the WM3, when they went into prison and how old they are now.  Mid-teens to mid-twenties.  Those were some great years for me.  I spent them all over the world.  They spent theirs in small rooms with no natural light for something they didn't do.  All of a sudden, my schedule opened up and I got busy."

Pennywise and Henry Rollins team-up for the "West Memphis Three" benefit album

Henry Rollins is doing a benefit album for the "West Memphis Three, three teenagers who were convicted of a crime unfairly and could face the death penalty for it; Jim Lindberg of Pennywise was asked to come up to Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and contribute vocals for a Black Flag song for the benefit album. The album will be Henry's band playing Black Flag songs with different singers for each track; there's a wide list of people doing vocals including Cory from Slipknot and Exene from X. The song Jim did was "Don't Care," (which is one we previously recorded for various projects; PW did the circle jerks version but Flag did it originally). This is a worthy cause and Henry is doing a cool thing by raising money for their defense. Learn more about the "West Memphis Three" at www.wm3.org (source - Epitaph Records)

...about the making of this record:
(by Mr. Henry Rollins)

"We chose to record in Chicago for a couple of reasons.  I really like the Metro as a venue.  I did my first show there in 1982, I believe.  The Chicago
audience is 100% full-on.  We brought out Clif Norrell to record.  He has recorded and mixed this band for several years now.  We taped analog and mixed analog.  There were no overdubs made.  A special thanks to Mike Curtis for helping us get such great guitar sounds onstage and in the studio.  We would like to thank you, our audience as our existence as a touring band depends entirely upon you." 2.13.61

Negative Trend EP

Mercenaries
Meathouse
Black and Red
How Ya Feelin'

Available now from 2.13.61.  "A Negative Trend in Music: About 25 years ago, I found a single at Skip Groff’s Yesterday and Today record store that has remained one of my favorite 7” records of all time: The Negative Trend EP. I knew nothing about the band and probably bought it because it was only two dollars. The first time I played the four song EP, I was blown away by the heaviness of the band and the dark intensity of the singer. It occurred to me that these were not boys but angry men who played with malice. Many of us in the DC scene got the record and immediately became fans. Over the years I would see the Negative Trend record here and there, mostly bootlegged versions of the 7” and the occasional copy of the 12” re-release. At one point in the late 90’s, I asked the band’s drummer Steve DePace what was happening with the Negative Trend record and told him if I ever found out where the tapes were, I was going to put that record out so everyone could hear it. Early this year, I found them and we’re releasing the EP on CD. Steve from Subterranean Records mastered the record from the master mix tapes at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley CA and we worked off my single for the artwork. The tape held up over all these years and the mastering is fantastic. The Negative Trend EP never sounded better. I am so excited to be releasing this record on my label. The EP contains four songs: Mercenaries, Meat House, Black and Red, How Ya Feelin’. Four bludgeoning, savage, Stooges-like punches in the face that have not lost any power in over a quarter century. The Negative Trend EP and Black Flag’s Nervous Breakdown EP are in my opinion, the two most intense 7” EPs from the whole American Punk Rock-Hardcore shootin’ match. We are offering the Negative Trend EP on CD for five dollars. If you are a fan of pop music, this is not the record for you. If you are someone who digs Black Flag, the Misfits, Flipper and other heavy music—this record was made for you. We’re offering the record at the cheapest possible price in the hopes that you will be so taken with my enthusiasm and overcome with curiosity, or perhaps just want to hear this gem again, that you will just get it. Those of you who checked out my radio show, Harmony In My Head, last year may have heard some of these songs. I got a lot of mail about the Negative Trend tracks. Getting this record out has been a long standing ambition of mine and a labor of love to get over the wall. I hope you check it out and dig it. Here’s some info on the EP: Mercenaries (Shatter / Gray), Meat House (Shatter / Gray), Black and Red (Gray), How Ya Feelin’? (Waters / Gray) -- Steve DePace – Drums (Later in Flipper), Will Shatter – Bass (Later in Flipper), Craig Gray – Guitar (Later in the Toiling Midgets), Mikal Waters – Vocal -- Produced by Debbie Dub and Negative Trend, Engineered by Stu the hippy, June 1978 - San Francisco CA"

District Line

Rollins new label is a showcase for Washington D.C. bands.  The first releases are a 2xCD re-issue of Trouble Funk's "Live / Early Singles" and a re-issue of Skip Groff's various artists compilation "30 Seconds Over DC".  The Trouble Funk was originally released on vinyl in 1981 and was initially re-issued as seperate CDs in 1996 and 1997 by Rollins and Rick Rubin's now defunct Infinite Zero label.  "30 Seconds" was originally released on vinyl in 1978.  Rollins states "like many CDs on 2-13-61, one dollar from each District Line release will be donated to a good organization.  District Line being area-specific, the monies will be donated to DC area locations.  I have not decided on the destinations of the contributions but I will when I have researched it and it shall be done."  The Trouble Funk liner notes are available here.  For more information on both, visit the 2.13.61 store.  For Rollins' introduction of the label, see the 5-17-04 newsletter on the news page.
