Not another tour? Absolutely. I had to get one more lap in before the big guy goes out to pasture at the Crawford Ranch. Even though the ex-president will no doubt bail on his fake prop no-hope cowpoke habitat as soon as he gets the chance, I am sure he will at least stop in to pick up his crayons and watch the servants sift the puke out of the pool and roll up the carpets... Meanwhile, I will be on the road and perhaps coming to your town. Since I was last on tour in these cities, I have been traveling fairly nonstop and have many things to report on. Hopefully, we will have the new volume of Fanatic! on the road for this tour. It goes to the printer any minute now. If you are so inclined to check out this book, this might be the prime opportunity to get one as the postage could cause some discomfort. I asked my pal Shepard Fairey to design the poster for the tour and he kindly did so we will have them with us, they will be a limited edition. I will be on the road in Europe all of August and by the time I hit the road in America, I should be primed for this relatively short list of dates. I will not be doing many shows in 2009 as I will be all over the place gathering information for the next tour. As always, I look forward to being on the road and of course, to seeing you at the shows. Below are the dates. Thanks for reading. Henry

Hello from beautiful Belfast Northern Ireland. I am back on tour after 40 hours off a few days ago. Last night I was onstage here and today is a day off. From here I will be going to Spain for some shows and then to Australia and New Zealand.

We have a new release, it’s a DVD/CD thing: The CD is audio taken from a show in San Francisco and one in Amsterdam Holland from last year. The DVD is a show from a few years ago done at a small club called Dingwall’s in London that was shown on BBC 4 and Comedy Central. This set has been released in a 2CD box, not a DVD sized one, and there are two places to get it: from our website or from Best Buy. This is a limited edition release. When the run is done, the DVD will come back into print but I will do something else audio-wise so if you want to get a copy of the CD, this is the only way to do it.

There are a lot of shows booked and more being booked until the end of the year. The Australian and New Zealand dates are all announced. What’s coming up are shows in Edinburgh Scotland in August at the Edinburgh Festival. I think I am doing 8 nights there, when I get the hard dates on those I will post them. Also there will be some other European dates planned in that month but I don’t know anything about them yet. Also, there are US and Canadian dates planned for September through November that are weeks away from getting firmed up and I will post them when I get them.

Past that, I am where I should be, on the road and hitting stage more often than not. I am 52 shows into the year and am looking forward to being out as much as possible one way or another in 2008. I will be off this leg of the tour in a few weeks and then will finish up the two books set for release later in the year as well as work on some re-issues. I think I will do something really cool with the Hard Volume album and expand it to a 2CD set and try to get some unreleased stuff from that time period on there to make things interesting.

That’s all I can think of at this moment so I will leave it here. Thanks. -- Henry, 03-31-08 Belfast Northern Ireland

A Quick Heads Up: Hey. I am sitting at Ian MacKaye’s house and we are having one of our great hang outs. It’s the first day off on the tour and speaking truthfully, I don’t mind it. We had a great day today, walking around and checking things out. I wanted to tell you that for the radio broadcast on the 26th of this month, we have two very special guest hosts. Live in the studio for the entire two hours will be artist Shepard Fairey and skate legend Tony Alva. Tuesday night 8-10 pm PST. Here’s the site info: http://www.indie1031.fm/. I hope you get a chance to tune in. Also, there’s a couple of new Dispatches up and you Sydney Australia folks who were upset that the shows sold out, don’t worry, tickets for more shows are going on sale like right now. Thanks. --Henry

Hello. Great news. Ian MacKaye, from the bands Minor Threat, Fugazi and The Evens will be filling in for me on my weekly radio broadcast on Indie 103 this coming Tuesday night 02-12-08 from 8 to 10 PM PST. He will be live. I don't know what he will play and I am jealous that I can't hear it in real time but I'll be on a plane heading back from South Africa so unlike you, I will have to wait! I bet it's going to be great and the price is right so if you get a chance, check it out. http://www.indie1031.fm/ gets you there. Thanks. --Henry

Hello. It is January 30th and I am sitting in an airport in Dublin Ireland, waiting to board a flight to Manchester UK. Last night’s show here was a great time as usual. The Dublin audience is always great but the closer to the weekend it gets, the louder they can be. Luckily for me, it was a Tuesday night and there wasn’t much blood. I have been doing shows almost every night and that is the way I like it, better to stay busy out here. The shows in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and England have been great so far. I have two more shows in England, Manchester and Newcastle, then on to Scotland for two shows, one in Aberdeen and one in Glasgow. From there I go to South Africa for two shows, one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg. I have been doing South African press via phone and e-mail almost every day for several days now and it’s been interesting to say the least. For some of these people, I stopped doing anything at all after 1986 and they need me to catch them up on the last 22 years, others have no idea what to ask so I have to interview myself for twenty minutes but others seem to be ok. I have no idea what to expect from the shows there. I’m just going to see what happens and deal with it as best I can. It’s certainly not for me to tell them what’s happening there. I have been trying to get to SA for shows for some time and it never seemed to work out so I am glad that it’s finally happening.

Some of you have written in about the tour dates starting in February. If I was in your town last fall, I won’t be hitting those cities on this run. I hope to get back to some of the cities I got to last fall later in the year. I will be in Australia in April. I think all those dates are set and as soon as we get them, we will post them. As it is right now, I don’t know exactly when tickets will go on sale but I will be in all the usual places and I am, as always, looking forward to getting down there again.

02-01-08 Aberdeen Scotland. 1447 hrs. I am in the lobby of the hotel. I can’t seem to get online in my room so I think this will be my new office today. Last night’ show in Newcastle was a great time. I have two more shows here in Scotland and then on to the shows in South Africa and onwards to the American dates. I don’t know what else to tell you at this point, there are many shows and I am doing them one night at a time and so far, so good. The audiences have been generous and energetic and being on the road is as good as it gets for me.

Every month we have another installment of Heidi’s homemade films of me trying to survive her wrath. This month’s episode shows you close up how she tries to poison me. I get letters from time to time telling me that this kind of torture is exactly the kind of thing I need to stay in line. These video clips tend to inspire a lot of incoming mail which I understand and appreciate but due to current demands, I cannot answer it. So, if at all possible, perhaps you could hold off and wait until we convene out by the bus post show. I have travel, shows and other stuff that is taking up a lot of time at present. Like I said, I appreciate the letters but I don’t want to not answer them and at the same time, quite simply can’t keep up. Thanks for understanding. -- Henry

Rollins Newsletter Jan 2008

May You Live In Interesting Times Dept:  I finished work on Ice 44 (or whatever the film will eventually be called) on 12-20-07 and the next day left town for Islamabad, Pakistan. Why did I go there? A couple of reasons: I am curious and at the end of 2006, when I was in Dubai talking to some people who work for the US Gov’t, they told me Pakistan is a country I should stay out of. So, one night a few weeks ago I decided that I had to go. Arrangements were made and off I went for a week in Islamabad. I had no idea what I was going to do which is an interesting way to travel, I can’t recommend it but I can’t recommend many things I do. Anyway, I was there the day that Benazir Bhutto was assassinated which was a sad event, of course, but an interesting time to be there all the same. The day after she had been killed I walked around the Blue Section where all the shops are. I had just been there the day before, meeting people and taking it all in, but on this day the scene was quite different: tires were burning in the street, men were crying loudly, people were protesting and the police, dressed in riot gear, watched from the sidelines. I reckoned the best way to not stand out was to blend in, so I just walked into the middle of it and observed from there. It was a wild and intense hour. Men marched to the intersection to join other men who were there and the numbers started to grow. Media descended upon the scene. It was wild. After awhile everyone seemed to have had their fill and the crowd dissipated and soon I was standing almost alone. I met a lot of people on this trip and they were all very friendly. The food was great, the women were beautiful and the nights were cold and clear. Besides the death of Ms. Bhutto and the open despair of so many people I encountered, it was an amazing trip.

New Clip Of The Month:  I never see these damned things until they are online. It’s like that box of chocolates, or skinny-dipping with Karl Rove, you never know what you’re going to get. All day at the office Heidi was roaring with laughter knowing what was waiting for me when I went online to see what she had posted. Another month, another albatross.

You Saw Me Up There now on DVD:  Many years ago, a video of a talking show I did at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles came out called You Saw Me Up There. It went out of print and remained that way until two days ago when it came back from the plant on DVD for the first time. It took awhile to get things straightened out with the label that released it in the first place, hence the very long delay. Thank you for all the letters you sent over the years asking about the status of this thing. I am happy to see that it’s back with us.

Tour Dates:  I will hopefully be touring on and off until the end of November this year. So far, the January and February European dates are all set as well as the ones in South Africa and a 5 week tour of America and Canada in February and March. Australian dates are set for April. I will see if I can do more dates at the Fringe Fest in Scotland in August and will post those dates if I can get anything happening there. I had such a great time there last year, I would like to be part of it again this year if possible. I am hoping that I can go back out September through November in North America for more shows. We will post all dates on the website just as soon as they confirm so there’s no need to write in and ask if I’ll be here or there, we’ll let you know as soon as we can.

The Ruts:  Remember last year when I sang with The Ruts in London as part of the benefit for Ruts guitarist Paul Fox? Sadly, Paul passed away several weeks ago but the show was captured on video and will be released in late January in Europe. There will be a release party on January 25 at the Shepherds Bush Empire. You can get information at www.myspace.com/TheRutsOfficialPage. Also, the live version we did of the song Babylon’s Burning has been released for download and information on that is also on this site. As it happens, I have a night off on the 25th and will be at the event introducing the film. The two remaining Ruts, Segs and Dave Ruffy, will be there and I’m sure some other cool Punk notables will be as well, so it should be a great night, show up if you can. I will be onstage live at the Hammersmith Odeon the next night, that should be a good time, I love that venue.

IFC Show:  The good folks at IFC have asked if I would do three “Live & Uncut” specials for 2008. Some of you may be familiar with the ones I did for them from New York and Israel. The first one will be shot in South Africa in February, the next will be in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I don’t know where the third one will be yet. We won’t be doing the regular show this year, they like it better when I am out and about and they got a very good response on the Israel show and want to do more. I am happy to be working with them again this year.

Looking Ahead Dept:  In 2008 I will release two books: Fanatic! Vol. 3 and A Preferred Blur. I don’t have firm release dates yet as they are both being worked on but when they are set to come out, I will let you know.

My short leash has been jerked once more and orders from the top have come down to my lowly station and I have been informed that I will turn around a new newsletter NOW.

I have been back from the tour for a little more than two weeks and have been settling back into the office and weekly radio and it’s been pretty good. The tour resumes in a few weeks and I am looking forward to getting back out there. In preparation for that, I have been working on broadcasts for next year and have already taped a few for use in January and February will be doing more all the way up until I leave. One of the better experiences I have had since I have been back was on Thanksgiving day, a day I usually don’t do anything but work at the office. I was invited to eat at the Shatner’s residence so I went. The food was good and the Shatner family and friends were very cool. I resembled a human being for a few hours there, spending time in a lit room with people who were related to each other. The friendliness the Shatners have shown me since I met Bill and Liz has been really swell and I have learned a lot from it.

I have been getting a lot of letters asking if there will be more shows in America on this tour, why did I skip this place, etc. It’s not that there are places I am trying to avoid, it’s just that you get what you get as far as dates and sometimes some places don’t slot in and you don’t get to do a show there. That’s why, when I can, book more shows later on and get to those places. I will be doing another 4-5 weeks of shows in America and Canada starting around 02-20-08. When we get the dates, we will post them and notify all those on the mailing list. I would like nothing more than to be on the road more on than off until this time next year. I will be doing what I can to make that happen. I much prefer life on the bus than off.

For the last several months now, I have been working on a new book of journal entries and travel writing called A Preferred Blur. I will be getting that one ready to come out at some point next year as well as the third and final installment of the Fanatic! series. I really enjoyed writing about all that music but I won’t have the time to do it next year so I will end it on the last broadcast of my radio show for this year. I have some other music related writing projects that I want to start on next year but they might take awhile to complete.

As promised, there’s a new clip of the month up on the site. This one just further illustrates how Heidi does all she can to disrupt my normal comings and goings as best she can. She insists that I need this to be a better person or something. Anyway, the new clip is a good one and the price is right so check it out if you get a chance, it’s on the site now. >>>> Breaking news. Heidi has just come over to my side of the building for the too manyth time today to hector and harass me. She just spent several minutes having me open file after file on my computer just so she could look. I showed her a nice picture of a crocodile eating a zebra, that one always sends her out of the room.

Anyway, we are working away at the mail order and turning around your orders. Thanks for reading. Henry

Hello. I have just returned from the first leg of the Provoked Tour. Before I say anything else, I wanted to thank all of you who showed up. Also, to all the people I met out by the bus after the show, thanks for sticking around, it was good to meet you all. I know that some of the performances were a little long and I am sorry about that but there was a lot I wanted to say. I hope you have all recovered by now. The tour will resume in January and go fairly non-stop until May. There will be dates in Europe, South Africa, North America and Australia. When dates firm up, we will post them on the website. Hopefully the shows in South Africa will be filmed for an IFC special.

It’s hard to believe the year is almost over. I have been going non-stop since January 1st. The show on IFC was a lot of work but well worth it as I think we did a good season, I gave a lot of time to the radio show I have in Indie 103 as well. In between working, I tried to get out and travel as much as I could. As many of you probably know, I went to Israel, Jordan, Iran, Syria and Lebanon this year. All these places were fascinating and informative. I was also in England, Scotland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Dubai and Australia. Hopefully, next year will be as busy as this one. I like to be on the road more often than not.

Again, thanks for showing up at the shows and thanks for your letters and general kindness. I’ll see you down on the road.

Here’s some of the things that are new on the site as well as some other stuff:

New DVD: Live In San Francisco 1990. Many years ago, my friend Joe Cole and I made plans to release some of my talking shows on video. Joe shot some shows before he was killed in late 1991. Over the years, we have thought about releasing some of this footage but for one reason or another, we have not until now. This show is from 1990 and it’s not a multicamera shoot with multichannel stereo audio so we have priced it accordingly and hope you enjoy all its low-fi splendor. Hopefully we will be releasing more of these old shows in the future.

New Book: Fanatic! Vol. 2. As some of you know, I have a radio show in Los Angeles on Indie 101.3 called Harmony In My Head, named after the great Buzzcocks song. For the last few years, I have annotated all the songs I broadcast in an effort to get as much information about the music out there as possible and also because I enjoy writing obsessively about the music I like. This furious activity has lead to a series of books called Fanatic!. The first volume of the projected three volume set was released a couple of years ago and the new one, Vol. 2 is now available. This book comes in at over 450 pages and includes many repros of flyers, ads and other goodies culled from my own stash as well as some borrowed from other private collections. The book is an over achiever’s fanzine and fans of the radio show or anyone interested in an off-the-wall music reference book might get a kick out of it. I know that for many of you, the radio show is not easy to access and the book might not hold a great deal of interest, so to make things a bit more appetizing, we are offering a discount if you get both books. Separately the books are 10 each but only 15 bucks total if you get both volumes of Fanatic! I think some of you will have fun with these books and I want to get them out to you, causing as little misery as possible!

Trouble Funk, 30 Seconds Over DC, Negative Trend EP: These are three CD titles that we have currently in stock. If you are into some serious, heavy music, you really want to check out the Negative Trend record. It’s the first time it’s ever been on CD and it was a very long time ambition of mine to get that record into print. If you are a fan of old Black Flag and hard stuff like that, this is a serious CD. The Trouble Funk Live and Studio 2CD set is some of best Go Go Funk Washington DC ever unleashed upon the world, I play tracks from this CD on my radio show all the time, really great stuff. And lastly, 30 Seconds Over DC is a great compilation CD of old DC area bands that was only out on vinyl for many years in DC but a couple of years ago, I put it out on CD, it sounds great, one of those small of fame records that you might really get a kick out of.

Clip Of The Month: Many of you have witnessed our first clip of the month where Heidi attempts to bedevil me and keep me from working purposefully. Heidi has another one all set to go that will start promptly at the beginning of December. Thanks for your kind letters about this month’s clip. Now you see what I go through every day here. I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is no, it’s not easy but somehow I get through the day.

National Geographic documentaries: On Monday, November 26th, National Geographic will be airing two documentaries on ATF infiltration of two motorcycle gangs, The Hells Angels and The Mongols. They are really interesting. I did the narration for both and I must say, I am really pleased to have worked with National Geographic, having been a fan since I was very young. Below are links to their site with the times they are playing. I believe they will be airing back to back:

Hells Angels doc. info: http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/ET/popup/200711262000.html
Mongols doc. info:  http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/ET/popup/200711262100.html

2008: I will hopefully be doing tour dates throughout most of next year. I don’t have everything completely planned out but ideally, I want to be out on the road more often than not. As things get booked, we will post the dates. I am working on a book called A Preferred Blur, which contains journal entries and travel stories, that will hopefully emerge about a year from now. Fanatic! Vol. 3 should be at some point in 2008 too. Also slated for next year will be the rest of the Rollins Band re-issues and hopefully some unreleased tracks as well as expanded versions of some of the older talking records and perhaps some new spoken releases culled from the last two tours. As usual, we are constantly working away at this stuff and get it out there as soon as we can.

Hello folks. Here’s a small update on what is happening from our end. I am on tour right now as you probably know but I wanted to alert you to something happening at our humble website that you might find interesting.

Heidi spent a good part of the last several months following me all over the office with her video camera basically assaulting me. In an effort to show you what I have to go through with this person, we will be posting clips of the footage (called Battling Tops: Dismantling Henry Rollins) on the site every month.

In the first clip you will witness Heidi poison my coffee, expose the contents of my freezer and take years off my life with her shock and awe tactics. Now you can witness how Heidi May and I clash routinely during a normal day at the office. We will post a new clip every month, it will be all you can stand, believe me. I think you will get a kick out of them and wonder how I have survived this long.

When I get back from this tour in a few weeks, we will start our year end sales. We have a new DVD and some other stuff that I will detail in next month's newsletter. The shows have been going very well and I am glad to be out here with a show every night. I always wish these tours would last longer but I guess 50 shows in one tour is plenty. There will be more shows next year so I have that to look forward to.

Anyway, this slight tap on the shoulder is basically to announce the beginning of the Heidi v. Henry video epic coming to our website. Medic! Thanks. --Henry

Hello! This is a short newsletter to tell you about my tour that starts in a few days. I have a bunch of speaking dates lined up for North America starting Friday, September 14th and ending November 10th. The dates are listed at the bottom of this letter. The name of the tour is “Provoked”. Why did I use that word to name the tour? For the sake of ad mats and all, these tours have to be called something so I thought of what my state of mind is at this time and “Provoked” fits very well. I do a lot of interviews and fairly often, the interviewers tell me that I am “provocative” in what I say. I don’t agree at all. We are in a war in Iraq that has at best, questionable origins, we watch elected officials lie under oath, (I could go on and on) and I’m provocative? Little old me? I think not. I am, however, quite provoked. To be succinct, they have gotten my attention.
There is a new tour manager. His name is Ward. Good guy. Our new merch guy is named Angel and hopefully he will be able to answer merch questions you may have. Tim is back behind the wheel of the bus so all should go smoothly and safely show to show. I get a lot of letters asking if there will be an opportunity to meet me after the show. I am flattered that anyone is interested. The answer is yes, of course. Post show, I go to the bus and hang out in front of it and meet anyone who is there, sign stuff, do photos, talk, whatever else.
I have gotten letters expressing frustration that I am not going to be in their particular town as I have on previous tours. Again, thanks for thinking of me. Tours are not always easy to put together and sometimes places get left out only because there was no way to route that particular place into the schedule or there was not any availability. I will do my best to get to all those places this tour will miss later on in 2008. I have a feeling this tour may extend itself all the way until the end of next year.
Note to you Europeans, Australians and other happening places outside of North America: I will be getting out there in early 2008. European dates are booked and will be posted soon and we’re working on Australia and other places.
I have a new book back from the printer. It’s Vol. 2 of Fanatic!. It is comprised of all the broadcast notes from my radio show Harmony In My Head (Harmonyinmyhead.com) on Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles. Some of you are familiar with the show and may have checked out the previous volume of the book. Fanatic! Vol. 2 will be on the bus with us, making its debut on this tour. It won’t be available on the website until after Thanksgiving.
What else to tell you? I have some good stories for this tour and am looking forward to hitting the road. I thank you for all the kind and enthusiastic letters you sent about the upcoming dates.
Speaking of dates, I’ve listed them below. I hope to see you out there. Thanks for reading this. --Henry

Hello Folks. It’s November and it’s been awhile since I have done a newsletter. This was a long year with a lot of work and I hope that next year will be just as busy.

We have started work on the next season of the IFC show and so far, the performances from the bands we taped are pretty mind blowing: The Mars Volta, Ryan Adams, The Blood Brothers, Peeping Tom, just to name a few. We have not done any sit down guest interviews as yet but I guess that starts soon enough. The first show of the new season will air at beginning of April. I’ll get that start date to you as soon as it’s firm.

I will be going out on another USO tour in December. The location is still being worked out and they tell me where I’m going only a few days before I leave for security reasons. Wherever it is I end up will be the right place to be. It will be my 7th USO tour. I am looking forward to it. These trips are never easy to do but always worth it.

I have a few talking shows tentatively booked for late this year/early next year in Dubai and Israel. I don’t expect I’ll be seeing many of you at these shows but I thought I’d let you know. When and if the dates firm up, I’ll post the details. I plan on getting some interesting travel done in the next several months so I’ll have some good stories for next year’s talking tour.

I hope some of you have checked out the radio show I do on Indie 103.1, Tuesday nights, 8-10 p.m. PST. You can go to www.harmonyinmyhead.com and read all the show’s play lists and broadcast notes. I perhaps spend too much time working on the show but it’s been a good time so far and I think I’m getting some good music out there.  It’s cool to get my record collection off the shelf and on the air. The show is listened to by people all over the world via the internet (you can access it via the above referenced website).

It is the end of the year and it’s time to unleash our new stuff. Here are the details:

NEW BOOK
A Dull Roar: The full title is A Dull Roar (What I Did On My Summer Deracination).  When my old band mates and I decided that after not playing together since 1997, we were going to get back together and tour in the summer of 2006, I figured there might be some good stories to tell. So, in March I started a journal to document the four months I allotted myself to prepare mentally and physically for the tour and also the tour itself. During this period, I finished the 2nd season of my show on The Independent Film Channel, worked in the Film Wrong Turn 2, performed at the Download Festival in England and made trips in and out of New York City for band practice and press. As I have in the past, I overworked, underslept, blew out joints and generally had a swell time. The tour itself had its shares of ups and downs, which are documented in the book.

I know what some of you are thinking, and no, it’s not the Dispatches file. For fans of my books Broken Summers and Smile You’re Traveling, you may find this book to your liking. We printed a limited 1st edition of 1000 copies that will differentiate itself from the rest of the press run by having a different colored cover, a signed & numbered title page and the coolest part (to me anyway) is the flexibound cover. This book will not be at retail for a long time, if ever.

NEW DVD
Live In The Conversation Pit: Some of you may have seen this one on EBay or on Amazon.com at some absurd price. That’s because a small run of them were pressed in Australia several months ago and found themselves on other shores. The domestic version is all done and it’s the same as the one that came from Australia only at a much better price. The DVD is from a multi-night run of shows in Sydney Australia in May of 2005 while on the 25 years Of Bullshit Tour. It came out looking and sounding good.

OLD DVD BETTER PRICE
Up For It: There’s nothing new about this DVD but there’s some good news about it. Years ago, we did a licensing deal with another label to release this title and we had to buy pieces from them to sell on our site and they charged us plenty. That old deal just ran out and we pressed up a run of them and wouldn’t dare charge that kind of money now that we have it back here where it belongs. It was 24 bucks but now that we’ve cut out the middle man, it’s 15 bucks. The new cover is cooler looking, but there’s nothing new about the DVD itself.

IN THE WORKS
Fanatic! Vol. 2: As the year winds down, so too does the work on the next installment of my labor of obsession, Fanatic! Vol. 2. Same as the previous volume, this is the broadcast notes from my show on LA’s own Indie 103.1 (where I have a radio show, once a week on Tuesday nights from 8 to 10 p.m. PST called Harmony In My Head). I liked what we did with the first volume but for Vol. 2, I wanted to add more images so I started digging deep into my reserves for flyers, press clippings and other stuff relating to the songs that would be great to look at. I reached out to some fellow Fanatics and borrowed some great Damned and Black Flag flyers and clippings and made Carol and Dave crazy with all the scans and reductions but it will be worth it when you see it. As soon as Dull Roar was away to the printer and off our desks, we immediately started in on this book. It’s almost done and should be ready at some point in 2007.

Talk Is Cheap Vol. 5: I haven’t had time yet to sit down with Rae and go through the shows that were recorded on the 25 Years Of Bullshit Tour but I will have some time soon and will be on the case. When Talk 5 is done, I’ll let you know.

Rollins Band Re-Issues: We will be re-releasing some of the old catalog in 2007. The first two up will be Hot Animal Machine and Life Time. Nothing will be different with Hot Animal Machine but Life Time will contain all the live tracks from the original CD release as well as all the studio tracks from the sessions. All these tracks on one CD will be a first. Later in the year we will put out the Hard Volume album and the Turned On album will be remastered and indexed with track numbers. There will probably be some other things from that era coming out as well. We’ll keep you posted.

Hello folks. Not wanting to clog your mail box up with too many newsletters but I thought I should pass this along-

My book Fanatic! (which consists of all the playlists and annotated notes from the 2004 broadcasts of my radio show Harmony In My Head on Indie 103.1 FM) is back in print. We released this book at the end of last year and it's been out of print for a few months. We got a lot of letters asking if it be would available again so I'm writing to let you know that the books have arrived, it's back on the website and available right now.

I have signed up a few boxes of the books and they're ready to go. Thanks. --Henry

Hello all. I wanted to get this out to you sooner than later. The final round of band practice and pre-tour madness starts in a day or so and things will be getting a little rushed around here.

Radio Show: As some of you know, I have a radio show at Indie 103 here in Los Angeles called Harmony In My Head. I am on from 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights PST. As I will be away for a little while, I have put together some really cool shows that I wanted you to be aware of so you could check them out if you wanted to. Here's a brief rundown of the broadcasts to be:

Broadcast #31 Air Date: 08-01-06: We will start with an hour of nothing but Miles Davis. We will listen to several recordings in chronological order but mainly focused on his late sixties to mid-seventies recordings. From there the show swings into its more familiar format of all kinds of music until the end of the show.

Broadcast #32 Air Date: 08-08-06: The first half of the show is dedicated to on of the many great Austin TX musicians. Tonight it's Roky Erickson. From there we will play The Cramps Gravest Hits EP from start to finish and go on from there.

Broadcast #33 Air Date: 08-15-06: This is going to be a great one. I will be playing in Washington DC on this night and so the entire show will be nothing but DC area bands. There will be some fairly hard to find songs on the show as well as some that have never been played on the radio. This is one to check out.

Broadcast #34 Air Date: 08-22-06: This will be a monster show. We will listen to 25 Misfits songs. That's right, 25 tracks by The Misfits. We will profile the very hard to find 12 Hits From Hell album that was pulled days before being shipped to stores. We will be a-b'ing the original mixes of the album tracks against the mixes that made 12 Hits. We will play the original mix and then go straight into the 12 Hits mix so you can decide which one you like better. Some of this might be hard to follow so we will be posting the notes for the show Tuesday morning, hours before broadcast time so you can download them or have the page open if you are listening online and follow along. This is going to be a really cool broadcast. I have been working on this one for weeks. Please check it out if you can.

Broadcast #35 Air Date: 08-29-06: We have a great mix for this evening's show. Nothing conceptual like the previous broadcasts. I think there's only so many of those in a row you will be able to stand! This is a good one.

I will do my best to get the notes for the show up on the Harmony In My Head site either Monday or Tuesdays before the broadcast so you can see what's coming. That site address is http://www.harmonyinmyhead.com/ easy enough. If you want to listen online, the address for that is: http://www.indie1031.fm/listenlive.php

Upcoming Tour: We are heading out soon as many of you know. For those of you that we're not getting to on this run, I am sorry. To our European friends who are writing in: we have no tour plans beyond these dates coming. This tour will be the litmus test to determine if we want to go on and do more shows and possibly work on new music. As much as I would like to head right to Europe and all points beyond, it's not going to happen just yet. Hopefully by September or so, we'll all know a bit more than we do know about how it is amongst the five of us. At the moment, it's feeling and sounding really good and I would like nothing more than to play and record and tour until the wheels come off but I am only 20% of this outfit so we're going to have to wait and see. I do appreciate your letters and interest though, thanks.

We are the middle slot of a three band bill on this tour and have been allotted a one hour set. I have never heard The Riverboat Gamblers, who are opening the show but people at the radio station say they're great and the headliners, X are X—you know they're going too be great. Should be a good tour. I hope you show up.

Thanks for reading this.

Hello all. Even though I do the daily journal thing, I thought it would be a good idea to do a newsletter. Here’s some news and information on a few things.

THE TOUR: The Rollins Band: Theo Van Rock, Sim Cain, Chris Haskett, Melvin Gibbs and myself will be opening for the legendary Los Angeles band X. The dates are listed below. As some of you know, the dates have been posted for some time. I have been getting a lot of letters expressing concern and consternation over some of the places we’re not playing. For example, the tour is not reaching Seattle WA or Detroit MI. This is not because we don’t want to play these places. First off, it’s an X tour, we’re merely the middle slot band. Secondly, just because you want to play in a city doesn’t always mean there’s availability. Every night you see a band onstage, there were other tours who wanted that night on that stage and didn’t get it. So, we got what we got and that’s that. Any place we’re not getting to, I am sorry but your angry letters on this topic are a waste of time because I didn’t book this one. We get an hour a night and that’s it. We’re looking forward to it. I am satisfied with how the band is sounding and I think it’s going to be a good tour.

A SHORT FILM: Several months ago I was in a short film by Andy Watts called Deathdealer. Andy is a sturdy young director and friend of Road Manager Mike. At one point, RMM told me Andy had this short film in mind and wanted me to be the lead. I looked over the script and said sure. So, we all pitched in for Andy because he’s a good guy with good ideas. We shot the film for the most part in downtown LA in a few days. It’s pretty damn cool and it can now be viewed on I-tunes. Here’s Road Manager Mike with the information on that: Deathdealer: A Documentary. A unique mid-life crisis. Now available on iTunes for $1.99 as part of their International Shorts segment. Launch your iTunes/Music Store. Click "Short Films" in the left column, then the yellow “Shorts" button. You'll see Henry's mug, click on that and away you go. --Mike

THE DAY-TO-DAY: For the last few weeks I have been bouncing between LA and Vancouver. LA to work on the television show and Vancouver to work on the movie Wrong Turn 2, which is going very well. We have a great cast and crew and everyone’s working really hard so I think we will have a good film.

I was just in England for a couple of talking shows. I was at the Download Festival for the 2nd time and that was a blast. It’s a huge festival and this year, the three headliners over the three nights were Tool, Metallica and Guns n’ Roses. How much bigger can it get? Again, as last year, the audience was amazing. This time around they put me in a tent about three times the size as the one last year and it was packed. The next night I did a show at the Hackney Empire. What a great place! I don’t think I’ve been there before. Another great audience. I grabbed a few hours of sleep and Road Manager Mike and I staggered back out to Heathrow and left. I got back here to Vancouver and am back at work.

I wrap out of this movie at the end of the month and then it’s the last of the band practices before we hit the road with X. I am really looking forward to this tour. It’s great playing with these guys again. Below are the tour dates. Thanks for reading. --Henry

Attention You Damned Fanatics!!!!!!

This just in. I am in Newcastle Australia at present. Hours ago, I got an e-mail from my old pal Rat Scabies of The Damned. He is in LA at the moment. I told him I was returning to LA on Monday and asked if he would come in and do the radio show with me on Tuesday. He said yes. So, before the show, he and I will pick some music to play and head down to the station. I plan on bringing in some rare Damned stuff to see if we can jog Mr. Scabies memory and get some interesting anecdotes out of the man.

Rat is an interesting guy who saw some serious Punk Rock go down in his life. Talk about a guy who was really there! The Damned used to do shows with The Ruts, so there's some stories there. The first time I saw The Damned was also the first time I saw The Bad Brains on a hot DC summer night in 1979, so there's some stories there too. I think we're going to have a good time.

So, this coming Tuesday, Feb. 7th, turn your Damned dial or connect your Damned computer to the Damned Indie 103.1, 8 10 PM west coast time for Rat Scabies and myself. It's going to be a great one!!!

Site additions: Per your request, I have been working steadily on stuff to add to the 213 and Harmony In My Head sites. You wanted an online journal, I started one. It's on the 213
site and it's called Dispatches. Yes, I know, same title as the Michael Herr book. A great read, by the way. Anyway, I started on the damn thing weeks ago over the break. I will add to it by sending updates from the road or wherever I am. I am aiming for a daily entry.  Might take a day or two to get there or get posted, but that's what I'm going for. They will all be archived and easy to access. There will be all kinds of things in there. Interviews, articles I have written, interesting letters I have received, etc. I am trying to make it
interesting. So, like I said, you spoke, I heard and I'm on it. Also, I have received many letters asking for a list of books and writers I like. I have started in on that as well and will
be adding to it as often as I can. I am a fair way into it now and once I log in some more stuff, I will post it. That will be up pretty soon. And lastly, we are going to start a photo
section on the site that you will hopefully find interesting.

Harmony In My Head & Indie 103.1: As I told you in the last newsletter, my radio show Harmony In My Head is back on Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles. The show is music from
my record collection, no station playlist is remotely considered. The show airs Tuesday nights 8 10 pm West coast time. You can stream the show on your computer by going tothe Indie site http://www.indie1031.fm. I annotate all the songs in case anyone's interested in finding out more about the music we listened to. I post the notes after every show. That site address is: http://harmonyinmyhead.com. Also, you can leave mail for me there and we will be putting in a cool photo section in there as well.

Washington Post Interview: A few days ago, the Post online folks asked if I would do an interview and I said sure. So I did. All the questions we got to and a lot I answered after
the interview was over and sent back have been posted. I don't know if this is of any interest to you at all but here is the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/
content/discussion/2006/01/05/DI2006010501420.html

Talking shows in Australia: I was asked to be part of the Big Day Out Festival in New Zealand and Australia this year. Apparently a band dropped out and there was a slot open
and at some point, my name came up. In years previous, I had asked to be on that tour with my band and was always told no. I have been told by multiple sources that the people who run the BDO don't like me. You can fit the amount of sleep that deprives me of in a thimble and still have room for a thimble's worth of something. Anyway, I have somehow infiltrated Castle Keep and will be given 45 minutes on some stage somewhere on site. It's one hell of a line-up, Sleater-Kinney, The White Stripes, Mars Volta and the all time heavy weight king of rock and roll Iggy and the Stooges will be playing. That's as fine a bill as could be mustered anywhere. I fully expect to be assaulted by a multitude of sunbaked under-50 Australians, who can put up quite a fight, believe me. If I can somehow dodge the projectiles and drown them out, I will make it to the activities listed in the next section. Here's the dates anyway.
January
20. Auckland New Zealand (BDO)
22. Goldcoast Australia (BDO)
23. Byron Bay Australia
25. Newcastle Australia
26. Sydney Australia (BDO)
27. Hobart Australia
29. Melbourne Australia (BDO)
31. Geelong Australia
February
01. Canberra Australia
02. Newcastle Australia
03. Adelaide Australia (BDO)
05. Perth Australia (BDO)

February talking shows in America: I will be on the East Coast in February for some talking shows. On one of the days, I will be visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. This will be my third visit there. I can't think this time will be any easier than the last two were but it's a great thing to do and I am so glad for the opportunity.

13. Akron OH: Thursday's Lounge (330- 253-2651, 306 E Exchange St Akron, OH 44304 http://www.thursdayslounge.com)
16. NYC The Town Hall18. Philadelphia PA The Electric Factory
Marching Onwards: I have some dates happening in Europe for March. They are as follows:
15. Tongeren Belgium
16. Mainz Germany

Henry Rollins and his show Harmony In My Head back on Indie 103.1 Tuesday nights 8-10 pm, starting December 27, 2005.

***

Hello. I am happy to announce that I will be back on Indie 103.1 with my show, Harmony In My Head, on Tuesday nights from 8 to 10 pm West Coast Time starting 12-27-05 (a year to the day we shut 'er down last year).

Recently my manager told me that the Indie folks asked if I wanted to be back on the station, and seeing I was going to be in town fairly often in the next several months, I thought about it for about for half a second and said yes.

For those of you who listened to the show last year: It's more of the same. All kinds of music and commentary and, of course, there will be visits from Heidi Almighty. The Harmony In My Head site, www.harmonyinmyhead.com, will be back up with all the annotated notes and the show can be streamed from the Indie site: www.indie1031.fm. I am presently working on the play list for broadcast #1 and it's going to be a good one! The show wouldn't be the real deal if Engineer X wasn't there with me so I asked him if he could do it and he can so we're back at full strength! If you liked the notes from the show last year, an expanded version of them is available as a book called Fanatic! available from www.21361.com.

For those of you who didn't catch the show last year: I had a radio show on Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles called Harmony In My Head (named after the great Buzzcocks song). I have complete say in what I play and last year played everything from Bartok to Black Sabbath. If I like it, I play it. Every night after the show, I post an annotated play list with info on the bands, site addresses and usually way too much music fanatic information. I play a lot of different music and I do my best to stay away from the regular stuff played on the station all day, which isn't all that hard to do. So, if you'd like to hear 2 hours of cool music and my own special brand of vitriol once a week, be sure to listen to the show.

Also: I will be working on putting more content on the 21361 website. That's what I will be doing all through the Christmas holiday. Hopefully in early 2006 it will be up there. I have some ideas but it will take hours and thousands of words to get them over the wall, so I have my work cut out for me. I'm on it though.

Ok, back to the mail order. Thanks again for coming out to the shows this year and checking out the new books, etc. I can't wait to get back on the air.
Thanks! Henry

11-23-05

Hello. I am back from tour. I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the shows. I had a great time and I hope you all did as well. 2005 was a good year for me - lots of shows, work and travel. I know I didn't keep up on the newsletters and I was completely lame with adding things to the site. I promise to work on that in 2006. The only thing I can offer in my own defense is that getting Fanatic! and Roomanitarian together took a great deal of the time. I think I'm going to add a page on the website that I can update regularly listing guests on the IFC show and other any other new info. rather than annoy you with incoming e-mails all the time. Information is good but pestering people isn't, so I will refrain from sending stuff your way unless it's tour dates or new releases. I promise to update the site more often. I am looking forward to seeing what that will mean but I will throw myself at it.

Quite honestly, I don't remember what the last newsletter contained so I will quickly re-cap the last several weeks here:

In August, Road Manager Mike and I went to Egypt and Turkey on behalf of the USO. We were told it was the first ever USO tour into Egypt. We left out of Cairo and crossed the Sinai Desert to the eastern edge of the peninsula and went north with the Gulf of Aqaba on our right. In Egypt, we visited multi-national forces who are there basically keeping their eyes on Saudi Arabia, Israel and Egypt (as they are not always the friendliest of neighbors). It was an eye opening and intense time to say the least. In Taba, I got a good look at the Hilton hotel that was bombed in October of last year. They're still rebuilding it. The Sinai region is hot as hell, I liked it a lot but don't know how people survive it. By the late afternoon, the heat is like a hammer. It was interesting to be in frozen Siberia at the beginning of the year and in this opposite, but equally extreme, environment at the end of the year. Turkey was interesting but not as tightly wound as Egypt. It was great meeting all the soldiers out there.

In September I made my second trip to Walter Reed Army Medical to visit with wounded soldiers. I was part of a group of three: myself, Kathy Kinney from the Drew Carey Show and the comedian Jeff Ross. They are both very cool and very funny people who do a lot of USO work. It was an easier visit than the one I made in February. It wasn't as hard with three of us in the room as it displaced some of the pressure of a one-on-one visit and all the intensity that goes with it. Besides that, it was great to watch Kathy and Jeff cheer up the patients. They are really funny and their devotion to the troops is apparent. I greatly admire them both. The hospital visits have proven to be some of the harder days of my life but completely worth it. Anything that can bring a smile to the faces of these guys and gals is a great thing to be a part of.

I hope to keep working with the USO in 2006 doing whatever I can. So far there's nothing planned but Road Manager Mike and I are standing by, good to go when we get the call.

The spoken show tour resumed in late September and went until the end of November.

I wanted to thank all of you for coming out to see the shows this year. America, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Scotland and Sweden. You all are very good to me and I can't tell you how much I appreciate seeing you out there and meeting those of you who hang out by the bus after the show. Thank you for the letters and the kind words. I have toured and done shows every year for 25 years straight and the fact that you show up year after year is incredible to me. So, again, thank you, thank you, thank you.

At the end of every year, we have our big sale and release ritual. Here's the rundown on what we have happening for the end of 2005. All these items are available now at www.21361.com:

Roomanitarian: My new book Roomanitarian will be available Nov. 28. A limited edition hardcover version will be available only from our website and once they're gone (only 1000 copies), there will be no more and the book will be only be available in paperback from then on. As always, send in your signing request and I will sign the book to whomever you want. I will be at the desk next to the always wonderful Heidi "The Racket" May until the holidays start.

Fanatic!: The other book I put out this year, Fanatic!, is the very expanded notes from the almost 600 songs I played on the 27 broadcasts of my radio show Harmony In My Head on Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles from summer to winter of 2004. Information on the bands, the songs, some anecdotes, websites, discographies and train spotter type information throughout. We had this book out on the talking tour this fall and a lot of people wrote me and said they've been having a blast going through it. Almost 300 pages of fanatic music worship. Released in paperback only and since I will be in the office, I will gladly sign Fanatic! for you should you want me to. In fact, since I'm in the office, I am happy to sign any of my books you want to order, it's no problem.

A Negative Trend in Music: About 25 years ago, I found a single at Skip Groff's Yesterday and Today record store that has remained one of my favorite 7" records of all time: The Negative Trend EP. I knew nothing about the band and probably bought it because it was only two dollars. The first time I played the four song EP, I was blown away by the heaviness of the band and the dark intensity of the singer. It occurred to me that these were not boys but angry men who played with malice. Many of us in the DC scene got the record and immediately became fans. Over the years I would see the Negative Trend record here and there, mostly bootlegged versions of the 7" and the occasional copy of the 12" re-release. At one point in the late 90's, I asked the band's drummer Steve DePace what was happening with the Negative Trend record and told him if I ever found out where the tapes were, I was going to put that record out so everyone could hear it. Early this year, I found them and we're releasing the EP on CD. Steve from Subterranean Records mastered the record from the master mix tapes at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley CA and we worked off my single for the artwork. The tape held up over all these years and the mastering is fantastic. The Negative Trend EP never sounded better. I am so excited to be releasing this record on my label. The EP contains four songs: Mercenaries, Meat House, Black and Red, How Ya Feelin'. Four bludgeoning, savage, Stooges-like punches in the face that have not lost any power in over a quarter century. The Negative Trend EP and Black Flag's Nervous Breakdown EP are in my opinion, the two most intense 7" EPs from the whole American Punk Rock-Hardcore shootin' match. We are offering the Negative Trend EP on CD for five dollars. If you are a fan of pop music, this is not the record for you. If you are someone who digs Black Flag, the Misfits, Flipper and other heavy music—this record was made for you. Wee're offering the record at the cheapest possible price in the hopes that you will be so taken with my enthusiasm and overcome with curiosity, or perhaps just want to hear this gem again, that you will just get it. Those of you who checked out my radio show, Harmony In My Head, last year may have heard some of these songs. I got a lot of mail about the Negative Trend tracks. Getting this record out has been a long standing ambition of mine and a labor of love to get over the wall. I hope you check it out and dig it. Here's some info on the EP: Mercenaries (Shatter / Gray), Meat House (Shatter / Gray), Black and Red (Gray), How Ya Feelin'? (Waters / Gray) -- Steve DePace Drums (Later in Fllipper), Will Shatter Bass (Later in Flipper), Craig Gray  “ Guitar (Later in the Toiling Midgets), Mikal Waters Vocal --- Produced by Debbie Dub and Negative Trend, Engineered by Stu the hippy, June 1978 - San Francisco CA

Remastered and re-released:

Big Ugly Mouth + Short Walk on a Long Pier: The remastered version of Big Ugly Mouth is finished. I added my first ever talking release, the cassette and LP only Short Walk on a Long Pier on CD for the first time as a bonus CD. It's awful but it's free, which perhaps balances out the overall awfulness of it.

Sweatbox: As with Big Ugly Mouth, we went back to the master tapes and started again. Hopefully it sounds better than the previous version and we were able to add some extra minutes to disc #2 from a show in Budapest Hungary that wasn't on the previous version.

I hope you get a chance to check this stuff out. I have been playing the Negative Trend CD every day. I can't wait to hear what you think of it.

See you down the road. Henry

Hello folks. Henry here. Here are show dates that have been added to the tour:

October 16. Washington DC: The Black Cat, 9pm - 202.667.7960
The cat is out of the bag! There will be a show on Sunday the 16th at the Black Cat. All proceeds of the show will go to eSharp, which was suggested to me by the venue's owner Dante. Several weeks ago, I saw that the 16th was an off day and didn't like that one bit. I asked Road Manager Mike to look into a benefit show at the Black Cat. Calls were made, details worked out and we had a show.
eSharp is part of the Community Preservation and Development Corporation. For more info on them, check out http://www.cpdc.org/DiscoverWhatWeDo.php. eSharp is really cool. They help young people get hands-on training for studio production work and all things music.

October 20. Levittown NY: Governor's, 8pm - 516.731.3358
Says Road Manager Mike: This will replace the show at The Downtown, which has apparently closed. According to the Downtown website, refunds are available at point of purchase.

October 31. Minneapolis MN: Pantages Theater, 730pm - 612.373.5600
Happy Halloween. I have been getting a lot of letters from people in the Twin Cities asking why they had been left off the tour. Nothing personal, we just couldn't get the venue we wanted and would rather wait than make people sit in a venue that wasn't right. Anyway, things worked out and we got the Pantages for Halloween night.

November 22. Santa Clara CA: Avalon Nightclub, 8pm - 408.241.0777
I don't know anything about the venue but it should be a great night.

We will have the new book Fanatic! and the remastered versions Big Ugly Mouth and Sweatbox out with us on tour. Thanks and see you down the road. --Henry

Henry and Heidi will be taking Dickey Barret's morning slot on Indie 103.1 FM from 7 to 10 a.m. Wednesday August 17th. (www.indie1031.fm)

If you remember, this is the station I had my radio show on last year. Dickey is taking the week off and different hosts are filling in for him and so the classic trio of Henry, Heidi and Engineer X will once again take control of the airwaves for three hours bright and early tomorrow morning. Tune in because it's going to be live!

Thanks. Henry

Hello. As promised, here's the tour dates for the fall. I left out show times as Road Manager Mike says those sometime change so ask the venue or consult your ticket or weekly entertainment guide.
A couple of things I wanted to mention. 13 and 14 of October, no that's not a typo. I will indeed be doing two nights at the always wonderful Variety Theater. Also, you Washington DC types. I am not doing a 9:30 Club or Lisner Auditorium show so October 15th in Alexandria VA at the The Birchmere Theater is your DC area show.
This is the earliest we have ever posted tour dates and we are really happy to be able to get the information out there sooner than later.
I am looking forward to getting out there and getting it going. These dates will be posted on the site and if there's any changes made to dates, locations or cities, they will be noted as soon as we get the information but these shows are locked in and should not change at all.
The last big North American tour was 2004 so it's been awhile and there's a lot of stories that have piled up in that time. See you down the road.

7-19-05

Hello to you all. It's been a long time since I did a newsletter and I have been getting some gentle and not so gentle pokes in the ribs from some of you to get on it. Duly noted. So, here I am and here it is.

I don't think I thanked all the Australian audiences for their attendance at the shows in May. I had a great time there as always and greatly appreciate your attendance and energy throughout the run. For those of you at the Sydney shows, yes, those were cameras, we shot all four shows and will be looking at the footage for a potential DVD release early next year.

To follow up on the last newsletter, I did those April benefit shows at McCabe's in Santa Monica and thanks to the people who showed up, we sold out all four shows and raised several thousand dollars for Hollygrove Children Services Center.

Also, there were some shows in Belgium and the UK in June. On the 10th I did a show in Brussels and it was a great time and then I did a show at the Download festival in a tent. I had nothing but sleepless apprehension about this show. I really didn't sleep the night before I was so wound up about it. I figured people would just yell and throw bottles. How wrong I was. What a great time that was. A few thousand people packed in the tent, it was a blast. After that show was done, road manager Mike and I hopped two trains to Liverpool and I did a show that night at the University.

The next day, a train and a plane got us to Heathrow in London where we boarded a flight bound for Seoul South Korea for a week of USO visits. We went from South Korea to mainland Japan to Okinawa (which might be the most humid place I have ever been, Darwin Australia and Madagascar being in close competition). From there we went to Guam for about 36 hours and from there back to LA and NY respectively.

There are some interesting stories from the trip and I will detail them on the fall tour. I have another USO tour planned for August but the USO and DOD ask that we not talk of the destinations until after the trip is over so for now I will say nothing but it should be interesting.

I don't know if any of you have been following the news, but knowing this crowd, I think the answer is a yes. The aggressive moves China is making for Unocal is interesting. The for and against arguments are really something. Hearing that we would basically be giving a Communist country some really intense technology that could potentially be used against us, (which is a real concern to me and CNN's Lou Dobbs at least) and the other side, the CATO Institute, that seems to think the sale of Unocal to China would be just dandy and no problem at all. I hope this thing doesn't turn into a partisan issue.

Also of interest to me is the Rove leak probe. A lot of people are weighing in on this one and it's great to watch Scott McClellan fend off the press core and Ann Coulter and the Fox News thugs relegate all this to Liberal whining. I wish the press wasn't so cowed by the Bush Administration. I wish more people were angry at what's happening in Iraq.

Interesting how the press is all over the London bombings story, as they should be, but over 200 people get blown to pieces in Iraq and it's just some news slotted in a small space under Tiger Woods' golf shoe.

Also interesting and disturbing to read James Wolcott's article, To Live and Die in Iraq, in the August Vanity Fair. In the article he pulls info from USA Today that claims an alarming statistic of vehicular deaths of vets back from Iraq and Afghanistan. "From October 2003 to September 2004, when troops first returned from Iraq, 132 soldiers died in vehicle accidents—a 28% jump from the previous 12 monthss. Two thirds of them were veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan." The rate has increased 23% since then. I guess these guys and gals are coming home pretty wound up.

I am scheduled to make my second Army Hospital visit in DC on September 14th. The one I did on February 12th is still working on me. I saw a lot of really bad stuff that day. I signed up for another visit though. As long as they want me, I'll keep going for it.

I have been in Los Angeles as of late, working on two books that will be coming out later this year. I think the first one has gone off to the printer and the second one is in its final stages of editing proofing.

About the books. The first one is called Fanatic! I believe I talked about it in the last newsletter but in case I didn't, here's an explanation of what it is. Fanatic! is the very expanded notes from the radio show called Harmony In My Head I was doing last year in Los Angeles on Indie 103.1 FM. I annotated all the songs I played and posted the notes on the website I had for the show. When I took the site down, I got a lot of letters bemoaning the disappearance of the notes. I put them all in one file to send to some of the moaners and when I read through them, I started re-writing and adding and pretty soon the thing had grown by about forty thousand words. I added anecdotes about shows I had seen and some interesting website and label information. One thing lead to another and it became a book. We made a cover with some of the singles from my collection and all the chapter heading pages are graced with rare ticket stubs, flyers, sheet music covers and other stuff from my shelves. It's basically one man jumping up and down about the music he loves. I hope you like it.

The other book is called Roomanitarian and it's along the lines of Solipsist. It is an angry book. I have been working on it for some time. It is divided into different chapters. Some of those include Letters to Whitey, To Ann Hitler with Love, Ended and Walking the Chasm. It's not a big piece of work, around 60 thousand words, but it's pretty concentrated stuff. Both of these books will be available this year and when we get closer to release dates, we will let you know.

We will be re-releasing an old talking record of mine, Big Ugly Mouth, as a 2CD set, the second disc being the first ever talking release I ever did called Short Walk on A Long Pier (which has never come out on CD). It's pretty bad but we're throwing it in for free so you can laugh at my expense. We're also working on a live box set of early Rollins Band recordings that puts together some previously released but out of print material along with some unreleased stuff. We'll be putting this music out at a good price so those inclined to check it out won't be overly put out. I'll get show and track listing information on this one as soon as I get it all put together.

There's a lot of talking shows starting in late September and those dates will be coming in soon. The tour goes from late September and until Thanksgiving when I have to get off the road and work at the office filling orders. Last year at the peak of the mail order work, I was in Afghanistan and the wonderful women at the office told me they would appreciate my presence this year. Actually, they didn't put it exactly that way but they certainly made themselves clear.

When we get all the dates in, we'll post them all at once. It's a pretty ambitious tour and as you know, I don't take many days off so we'll be all over the US and Canada so please wait for the dates to get posted before you write in asking if I'm getting to your city.

We just shot the August episode for my show on the Independent Film Channel and it came out pretty good I think. Billy Bob Thornton was the guest which was a big deal for me as I am quite a fan of his work. He was a really cool guy and the interview was great so I hope you get a chance to see it.

I got an interesting call the other day from my old pal Daryl, bass player in the Bad Brains, one of the great bands of WASHINGTON DC. He told me the band wanted to play the CBGB's benefit thing at the end of July and would I do the singing. I agreed and we started to get the set together and when we were going to practice and then a few days ago, the dates got postponed and I don't know when they will be rescheduled and where I'll be when they do. I have been getting a lot of letters asking if this was true and hopefully this answers those questions.

I will get back at you when we get some dates up.

Here's a chunk of Fanatic! to give you an idea of what it's like.

BROADCAST #03

AIR DATE: 06-14-04

The Lurkers Cyanide: This song is from the band's 2nd aalbum God's Lonely Men. I have been into this band for about twenty-five years now. They had a line up change at one point and lost their singer Howard Wall. I bought a couple of the singles the band did after he left but couldn't get to them. The Lurkers did a lot of singles and two great albums with Howard Wall. Their first album Fulham Fallout is a classic. Captain Oi, a really cool label in England, has put out both albums on CD with all the singles and demos. You get those two and the BBC Punk Sessions CD and you've got all the stuff by the classic line-up. I still listen to these guys all the time. God's Lonely Men sees the band really starting to grow as song writers without losing any edge but it's frustrating that there's no more material that features Howard Wall, who to me, is one of the all time great singers in Punk Rock. Completely Useless And Gratuitous Anecdote Dept.: We were in England in December of 1981 and had a gig at the Rainbow opening for the Exploited, one of the worst jokes in music history, completely pathetic. Anyway, the very great Honey Bane was opening the show and her bass player was none other then the Lurker's Nigel Moore. Ian MacKaye was out with us and at soundcheck time, we saw Nigel walking around and immediately recognized him. We ran at him, shaved heads and all, yelling, "You're in the Lurkers!" He freaked out and thought we were going to pound him. He mellowed out a little after we talked to him for a second and he found out we were merely rabid fans. He's the only Lurker I have ever met. I have always wanted to meet Howard Wall but I can't find the guy anywhere. Howard, come out! Your fan is waiting! While We're At It Dept.: Honey Bane did a great EP on the Small Wonder Label under the band name The Fatal Microbes. Violence Grows/Beautiful Pictures/Cry Baby. It's not hard to find on vinyl. Violence Grows and Beautiful Pictures have been put on CD on the Small Wonder Singles CDs on Anagram. Why they chose not to put Cry Baby on the CD comps. is beyond me. Why can't they just let the band have all its output on CD and not leave things incomplete?

Pailhead I Will Refuse: I don't know much about this. II know that Ian MacKaye and Al Jorgensen got together and did some songs. I don't know how it came together or whose idea it was. Ian told me a long time ago but I can't remember now. It's been a long time since I played Pailhead's Trait CD. I checked on Amazon.com and it seems to be in print. It was cool to hear it again. Who Cares? Dept.: I forgot that Mr. MacKaye says, "Fuckin' ready." right before he starts singing. Engineer X and I looked at each other as the "fuckin'" sailed by onto the Clear Channel polluted airwaves and hoped for the best. Sounds righteous when Ian says it though!

Bo Diddley Say Man: This is off the Chess Best Of CD. Dukowski used to play this now and again. I like that guitar sound on this track. Bo has done a lot of work and I have a lot of the records but the Best Of on Chess is the one I always go to when I need to hear the man. How many bands have copped Bo's beat? Busted! Your Parents May Have Been At This Show Dept.: Bo opened for the Clash on 15 February of 1979 when the band played at DC's Ontario Theater. I was a couple of days into being 18. Bo had total command of the stage. I remember he said something like, "Do you all remember when the coolest thing was to have a '55 Chevy and a girl at your side?" We all cheered "yes" of course. He said, "No you don't!" and kept on playing. The Clash were great that night as you would expect. I remember all the girls in the place were quite taken with Paul Simenon, the Clash bass player. We didn't have a car so we walked through the snow to get to the show. I wish I had a photo of the small line of us in our punk attire hiking home from the show.

And here's a bit of Roomanitarian, from the chapter titled Ended.

Because of you—my greatest inspiration. Your lies, your weakness, your toxic consumption, your cowardice and ignorance. Those last two, those were the greatest reasons for me to get as far away from as I could. For years, for decades—I was the waiter with dreams of assassination—I was the prisoner always carrying the handful of mortar out into the yard—I was the one who worked hard and to all seemed like the most dedicated when I was your greatest enemy. I smiled at your dinners and laughed at your jokes but in my mind I spat in your food and hoped for miscarriages. I looked you in the eye but I was always looking over the wall: It will be my ultimate triumph. More triumphant than never succumbing to your tobacco, alcohol and obesity. More than never getting caught up in your knee high expectation and appalling lack of discipline, decency and delivery. There will be none of your noise, none of your neurotic mediocrity and denial. Your ghettos and picked scabs, the sewage you call culture and the cowardice that passes for your government will not compromise me as it has so obviously compromised you. I am leaving you to this oblivion. Hold on tight to the whirling, shrapnel spewing dragon that you allowed to decimate your population and rape the will of your young. They got you, they'll get your children. You are what you have been bred to be: The Atrocity. You can deny it but it's too late. You can hate me but it's no use. You can try to weaken and stop me but you will be unable. Your land has been overrun, your cities have been turned into experiments in futility and continuous banal violence marathons. My victory will be shown to none and known only by me. My perfect and complete win will take place in relative solitude, in clean sanity, clarity, strength and a total lack of chaos. I am leaving. I am leaving and there will be no more. I will leave no forwarding address and my whereabouts and activities will only be known by accountants, lawyers and local merchants will have no idea who I am nor will they care for I will seem like a ghost wordlessly making cash transactions, never giving my name, making eye contact or uttering a word. There will be no conversations to have, no funerals to go to, no arguments or discussion. No betrayal or deceit. No vengeance or accumulating bitterness, no counting of days, no anticipation of rejection. What, you say? How can one go without these things? Why, they are the very stuff of life! Yes they are. They are if you're an idiot who waits for others to dictate how your life will play out. It's yours, right now. You and I have nothing to discuss. Your life and what you have achieved mean nothing to me. Your good deeds are meaningless in the world. History is silent. The present is a repeat of the mistakes of that which blundered before. There's no evolution, no progress to be had, no great discoveries to be made. The only relevant facts accrued in the past several decades helped to comprise a clearer picture of how the planet is being destroyed and how humans are toxic and disease ridden weak life forms. The miracles of human life are answers waiting to be revealed in the questions: how did these pathetic, watery, weak, easily killed and utterly horrible animals last so long and how ultimately funny and terribly sad is it that their greatest achievements were their undoing? Denial, fear, greed and god. What an epitaph. The Atrocity. For me, a small living space, some good books and the rest of my life without you. After that, a death on my terms, body never found, personal possessions destroyed. Papers, photographs and other records burned ahead of time. Complete and total victory over the wretched gaping wound that enslaves you. No me. Not ever.

Whoa.

Thanks for reading. See you down the road. Henry

Hello. I just got back from the ten show run at the Zipper Theater in New York City and I wanted to thank all the people who showed up night after night. I had a great time and wish I was still hitting that stage every night.

I have four shows coming up this weekend in Santa Monica, CA at a very small place called McCabe’s. Two sets a night, Friday and Saturday April 15 & 16. All the money will go to the kids at the Hollygrove Children and Family Services Center in Hollywood, CA. See below for ticket info. These will be the only Los Angeles area shows I will be doing. I don’t like doing shows in LA but it’s been a long time since I’ve done a show at McCabe’s and it’s always a good thing to pitch in to help out over at Hollygrove. Keep those kids fed, I say. So anyway, I have a lot of new material that I hammered out at the Zipper shows and am looking forward to two sets a night at McCabe’s.

We have a new CD here at the company. It’s 2CD set of comprising the Get Some Go Again album along with the Yellow Blues CD with two live cuts and a music video and press kit thing thrown in. Get Some Go Again had been out of print for some time so I figured we’d throw the entire session and then some into a single set to consolidate things and get it all out there at a good price.

Some advance warning. We are releasing two books of mine this year. The first one is called Fanatic! The book is a greatly expanded edition of the annotated notes from the radio show Harmony In My Head I had on Indie 103.1 here in LA last year. The book is full of information on the songs and bands I played on the shows as well as anecdotes, website addresses and thousands of word’s worth of self-indulgent music fan boy screed. This forest clearing tome will be available later in the year. When we get closer to the publication date, we’ll let you know.

I will be in Australia for talking shows in May, I am looking forward to getting down there again, it’s been almost two years since I was there. Dates listed below.

We just finished the May episode of Henry’s Film Corner and Crispin Glover was my guest. He was a fascinating interview. We discussed his movie What Is It? which was one of the most jarring film experiences of my short life and has to be seen to be believed. If you want more info. on Crispin and his film, here’s the place to go: www.crispinglover.com. I also reviewed a film that will be hitting theaters soon called The Smartest Guys In The Room which is a documentary on the Enron scandal. Really compelling stuff. I watched it twice. I hope you get a chance to see both films.

Anyway, when other dates for upcoming shows come in, we’ll let you know. Thanks. --Henry

Hello all. In Moscow Russia, waiting to go to the train station. With some dates in North America looming, I figured I should write in.

I am doing ten shows at the Zipper Theater in NYC between March 22 and April 2nd. It's a small theater and these will be short sets clocking in at around 90 minutes per the theater's request. I have already gotten some letters asking if the material will be different every night as some people are interested in seeing multiple nights. I can't promise anything but I will try to mix things up to keep myself challenged and in the moment. That means there will be stories from last year's tour, stuff that's happened since and stuff from the past. What and when, I really don't know. I can't think every show will be the same but I can't say how it will go night to night so attend at your own risk!

I will be doing two nights at McCabe's in Santa Monica, CA on April 15th & 16th. Each night will be two sets, two separate tickets. I was there the other night watching the very great Evens play. I was just sitting on the side checking out the show remembering the shows I had done and seen there over the years. I don't know, perhaps venue manager Lincoln sensed something but he came up to me after the show and asked, "So when are we going to get you in here?" I don't like doing shows in LA, but Santa Monica isn't LA, McCabe's is a high integrity place that always has great acts, so that was all I needed to hear. We stood there and started putting things together. The first thing that occurred to me was that I wanted the shows to be benefits, I don't know why but that's that. We are figuring out where to send the funds as I write this. The place only holds 150 people so it's a small setting. Should be fun. It's a great place, check them out at
