FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Special to the ACC Bulletin

May 7, 2001 -- Health, rescue and education projects designed to benefit Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, today and in the future, now have a strong supporter in the newly formed American Chesapeake Club (ACC) Charitable Trust.

Further study and research into health issues and genetics particular to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever (CBR), as well as investigation of injuries and concerns that affect dogs in general, will be made possible through donations to the trust. Education and rescue efforts for the breed will also be major recipients of trust funds.

Donations are expected to come from CBR breed enthusiasts worldwide through both monetary and auction contributions. Designated contributions may be to one of four areas: general fund, education, health and/or rescue. In addition, individuals may elect to name the trust as a recipient in their wills, even choosing to bequeath select items, such as Chesapeake memorabilia, for benefit auction.

"The ACC board feels that this trust will provide a positive way to promote appreciation and care of all dogs, but especially to nurture and protect the breed closest to our hearts - Chesapeakes," announced ACC President Diane Mazy.

"I am proud that our club has chosen to step forward and take action that will allow us to not only ensure humane and effective rescue of CBRs, but also to educate the public on the many aspects of being responsible dog owners", she added.

ACC members will be asked to make tax-deductible donations to the trust when they pay annual, year end dues, however contributions are welcome throughout the year. In addition, trustees plan to operate a booth at upcoming club events, such as the national specialties.

The charitable trust is actually considered an "estate" and a public charity, and as such is administered by trustees, who must be ACC members. While some of the trustees are also ACC board members, the newly formed trust will receive and manage contributions independently of the club. Current trustees are: Diane Mazy, ID; Alexandra Starr, CA; Paul Herzog, NJ; Sue Cone, NJ; Melissa Schumann, AZ; John Nichols, MN; and Marston Jones, MD.

Advice and consultation in various areas of expertise are received from Trust Advisory Committee members: Stephen Webb, PA; Sharon Coleman, CA; Mark Walsh, CA; Stephanie Roberson-Thomas, NC; and Eric Reinertson, IA.

Interested Chesapeake enthusiasts and friends may make contributions to the ACC Charitable Trust, 9934 Pratt Ct., Santee, CA 92071-1530. Receipts will be provided for donations of $75 or more. Credit card transactions are not available at this time.
