Why our book is available only through the OSP, Ravenroost, and PhytoTech Labs
Most people don't realize what goes into publishing a book. One of the big things is getting "permission" from the Bowkers company (which, in the US, is the ISBN "distributor"). In getting an ISBN
for your publications, anyone who wants to purchase your book can (in theory) buy it if they have this number. Using the ISBN allows you to look it up in big books (published, not coincidentally, by Bowkers), and
find out who publishes it. Your book store can then contact the publisher, and have them send you a copy.
Things get complicated from here, as most book stores don't want to deal with small publishers. They would prefer to buy from a large publisher, so that when they order 15,000 copies of the latest best sellers from
this publisher, they can add 100 more of a lesser title- from the same publisher. Few book stores want to send out a copy for one book from some small-name press that may only sell one book.
So when Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble sent us their literature (which they apparently do, if you publish a new book, thanks to that ISBN from Bowkers), we found that they would be more than happy to slap our book
on their website. All we had to do was sell them our book, and they would keep several copies on hand in their warehouses.
All was well and good, until we did the math. What they would pay us per copy was less than it took to print, bind, and issue our book. In other words, we would be selling it at a loss. We realize that the $45 cover
price isn't going to make this book leap off the shelves, but we only print them 100 at a time. Due to the esoteric nature of the subject, this is a VERY small-volume print. When we sell out, we take our disks to
the print shop, and have them make another hundred.
Anyway- the reason you can't buy our book from Amazon or Barnes and Noble isn't because we don't like them. We'd love to sell more books, and we'd like to make it easier for you to acquire a copy. But it doesn't make
good financial sense. We thank you for your patience, your business, and your interest, and we will land a book in your hands through one of our distributors. If there are any difficulties, e-mail us and we'll help you along.
Sincerely,
Aaron J. Hicks
