Taken from James Bean's Spiritual Awakening list:
General instructions from Kirpal Singh for meditation as often given in public settings.
WHAT TO DO
To practice meditation, we sit in any pose that we find most comfortable in which we can sit for a long time without moving. Any movement or noise during the meditation can disturb our concentration, and the concentration of those around us. Our breathing should go on normally; we need not pay any special attention to the breath.
We should close our eyes gently and look straight ahead, focusing our attention in the middle of the darkness lying in front of us. We should be relaxed but attentive, as if we were watching a movie screen and waiting for the movie to begin! That which sees the darkness is not our physical eyes, but is the Third or Single Eye located between and behind the eyebrows.
While gazing into the darkness that lies in front of you, please repeat any name of God with which you feel comfortable. Repeat the name very, very slowly, at intervals, with the tongue of thought -- repeat the name or names mentally within yourself. Mentally chant or repeat the name (or names) within yourself while gazing in front of you. This Repetition (or prayer) will keep the mind occupied and prevent it from wandering.
(Those of you who are Shabda Yoga initiates, please repeat the Five Charged Names given to you at the time of initiation.)
While repeating the name (or names) of God, our job is to sit calmly and quietly and lovingly gaze into the darkness lying in front of us. As we do so, the attention will automatically begin to collect at the Single Eye. There are vistas and vistas of sights inside. As the sensory currents withdraw, we forget the body. When we are fully collected at the Eye-Focus, we will begin to see some flashes of Light, or Lights of various colors.
Then as we concentrate more and more, these Lights will stabilize and we may see red, orange, yellow, golden Light, green, blue, violet, purple, White Light, suns, moons, or stars. We should concentrate in the middle of what we see and continue repeating the names of God.
