Excerpts from a Satsang given in 1956 at Sawan Ashram. Sat Sandesh Feb 1982

A person blind to the truth does not believe what a saint tells him, nor does he want to obey the saint's instructions. He does not exercise discrimination or separate truth from falsehood. He relies on his own limited intelligence. Such a person believes in the saint's teachings only to the extent it suits his thinking, and he leaves out the part that his mind does not accept. Thus, he makes little headway.

Paltu says,

a man who does not pay
the slightest attention
to the Guru's word
Is like one who has a boat,
but no oarsman.
How then can he cross the sea?

Though we do have the boat of the body, we cannot go across the sea of life unless we have someone who can guide us to the opposite shore.

The body is like the raiment
of the soul. O proud man, consider deeply,
Your apparel is wearing thin.
Get your linen washed now,
For one day the washerman
will depart.

The covering which is your body withering with age, becoming frayed with time, and defiled more and more. It is getting stains all over, and ultimately the filth will eat away the fabric. Get it washed now by the good cleaner while he still lives. In other words, make recourse to that human pole (Christ Power, Guru Power, Master Power) who is the embodiment of God-into-expression. He holds a commission from God to redeem mankind. Saints are true washermen. Find such a man who has the inner experience and get yourself washed by him while there is yet time.

Your dress is polluted with the sins of many past lives and even now the mind is receiving and storing innumerable mundane impressions. But hurry, for the cleaner might go away at any time! His human form will one day leave this earth. All Great apostles, rishis and munis who appeared on earth, shed their bodies at last, as all must.

The Guru is not the body but he manifests in a body. The God Power that works on-this bodily pole does not die. As Christ said: "I shall never leave thee nor forsake thee." When the Guru takes someone under his protection, he abides within him and is ever with him until he brings the soul to the lap of the Imperishable One.

Find a living Master, an expert cleaner, who is your contemporary. He who can wash away the dirt deep within you is rarely found. But be warned that the washerman will leave the human pole one day. You will repent when he departs from the scene. Unless you have followed his instructions, you will be left groping in the dark. If you have not molded your life as he said, and if you remain bereft of direct inner experience, you will go astray and suffer a lapse. You will listen to hearsay, be impressed by the tall talk of others, and dance to their tune. If you have not acquired inner vision, you will not be able to distinguish between the genuine and the fake. Swamiji Maharaj says that men of the world are constantly being distracted from the goal. They endlessly debate: "This man is right, the other one is false." When you find a true Guru, you should stop debating, and instead practice his teachings, meditate , and become capable of seeing the radiant form of the guru and speaking to him within. Only when you acheive this will ou become a true disciple, otherwise you are merely on probation. Your sheets are deeply soiled; wash them clean.

The Satguru is a pool of pure water; go to him for washing.

Go to one who is Truth pesonified. He is verily the Satguru.

Satguru is the one who knows the Imperishable Being,
Through him, the disciple is redeemed.
He sings praises of God, O Nanak.

On meeting such a one, you will be able to see for yourself, with your own inner eye.

It is inner perception that makes one sing praises of the Lord,
Such a song brings its own reward.

When your inner eye is opened you break forth into an ecstatic song and become intoxicated. Only the Guru can help you to wash away the dirt embedded deep in your soul's raiment. For the last five, ten, twenty or fifty years, as the case may be, you have not thought of this type of cleaning. Go to the washhouse of the Satguru, a man of true perception. He can take away the dirt, because he has the pure water for washing, i.e. his pure thoughts, his power of discrimination, his ability to judge truth and falsehood. Not only does he explain the theory to you, he also gives you the inner experience.

Thousands of Hazur's initiates regret that they did not learn to tap inside because they had been postponing their meditations too long. If they realize the need now, they will at least stop drifting aimlessly. Their trouble was that they constantly vacillated. The river bank was cool; they would come and enjoy a refreshing draught. After returning home from the satsang they would again feel the heat, and return a few weeks later for another cooling drink. This is how they passed their time. Hazur used to explain their attitude in his own inimitable manner: "Today the cot is broken, so we say, 'Get the carpenter.' Now, the chair is broken and we say, 'Get the carpenter.' Now, the door is broken, and we say, 'Get the carpenter.' How much better it would be if the carpenter lived with us."

True discipleship commences when the Guru's radiant form manifests and you converse with him within. This is straightforward; there is no fakery or ruse. This task must be accomplished in this lifetime. If you achieve it, you will never go astray.
