Thoughts and Memories

Ronald Reagan

In the early 1960's I enjoyed watching the actor Ronald Reagan host the G.E. Theater on television.   As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan became embroiled in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry; his political views shifted from liberal to conservative. He toured the country as a television host, becoming a spokesman for conservatism.

He also had a short commentary program on the radio. Then the most amazing thing happened. In 1966 the actor became governor of the state of California. He automatically became a member of the state Board of Regents of the University of California.

The board met at the Mission Inn during the time I was the assistant manager/sales manager. It was my responsibility to make the arrangements for the Board of Regents including those arrangements for the governor.

I’ll never forget this handsome, slim young looking governor as he walked from the governor’s limo through the lobby of the Mission Inn. I was a good host for him, but when he became president of the United States he never invited me to be his guest..
