Youthful Sales The depression years were tough, but as children growing up during those years we didn’t know just how tough it was. Irwin, my brother, earned extra money by selling magazines and having a newspaper route, Velma, my sister baby sat for neighbors and friends and I followed in my brother’s footsteps by becoming a sales person. My mother crochet pot holders and I sold them door to door. I also sold Christmas cards and even earned my way to Y.M.C.A. boy’s camp by selling bar of soap door to door. My best selling was the Liberty magazine and the Saturday Evening Post Magazine. While other boys sold an average of 10 to 15 magazines a week I sold over 100 a week and one time broke the one week record in San Diego by selling 225 Liberty Magazines. The district manager of the Saturday Evening Post put me in charge of getting other boys to sell magazines under my leadership. Not only would I sell the Post, but I also earned some money from the production of those working under me.
I am on the far left side and the district manager is on the far right side. The boys in the middle all worked in my group. |
