Well, the final elimination has taken place and now the final three teams are racing to be first, rather than avoiding being last. Tara and Wil, after using the fast forward in the previous episode, leave first. They are told to meet Sir John Logan Campbell. The cyrptic clue leaves teams confused, but locals will all know that the clue refers to a monument to Sir John Logal Campbell, called the "father of New Zealand." The monument is located on One Tree Hill.
Tara and Wil ask their driver what the clue means, and he explains it as they take off. They arrive there and discover they they are headed to Maui, Hawaii. They rush off to the airport, followed by the other two teams. They all reach the airport and book the same flight. It will leave from Auckland and take them to Sydney, then Honolulu, and eventually Maui.
One in Maui, the teams all grab taxis and race off to find the ruins of a specific old sugar mill. Tara/Wil arrive first, followed closely by the other two teams. They all wander around looking for the flag in the darkness. Tara/Wil find it first, and Chris/Alex spot them. Blake/Paige get it a few minutes later.
Now the teams are supposed to find the water
tower in Pauwela Pineapple Field. The trick is finding the specific
pineapple
field
via the very confusing and unmarked roads. The sun rises and it begins
to rain as the teams all arrive at the pineapple field at about the same
time.
Its time for the detour. On this leg, the teams can choose between Bike and Walk. The Bike option lets teams use mountain bikes to wander around the large pineapple field. The bike is fast, but the teams will have to find the lone red pineapple in the vast field. The Walk option requires teams to walk through the field. The travelling will be slower, but teams will have find one of four yellow pineapples hidden in the field.
All three teams chose to walk. They wander around aimlessly at first,
but Tara cleverly got up on Wil's shoulder's and spotted the pineapple
immediately. Chris/Alex, who were nearby, spotted Tara/Wil heading
for the pineapple. Blake/Paige found the pineapple about 5 minutes
after the other teams left. The pineapple clue directed teams to
the dock at McGregor Point. From there, the teams would have to hire
a boat to take them out to a clue located offshore of an volcanic island.
Tara/Wil were the first to arrive at the dock. Chris/Alex arrived right behind them. As Tara/Wil arrived at the buoy, they sped away trying not to let Chris/Alex spot the buoy. Chris/Alex spotted it anyway. This clue was a roadblock. It required one team member to put on snorkling gear and retrieve the next clue from a box suspended underwater. Wil and Alex performed the roadblock for their respective teams. Alex found the boxes immediately, as Wil swam around in circles in an area distant from the clue. They realized their mistake and headed over the buoy.
They both were having trouble with the boxes
as Blake/Paige arrived. Paige called Blake a good swimmer and let
him take
the roadblock. He jumped in, retrived the clue in no time, and vaulted
their team from last to first. They took off for the pit stop, the
Huialoha Chruch located in the most remote corner of Maui. Alex got
the box open soon after Blake, and they also took off. Wil continued
to have trouble with the box as Tara yelled at him from the boat.
Finally, Wil got the box open, having lost about 10 minutes in the process.
The church turned out to be located on a very remote, not well known road.
Blake/Paige realized they had overshot the road they were headed for and
turned around. Chris/Alex were also having trouble. Tara/Wil
realized their mistake and ended up right behind Blake/Paige. As
Paige spotted the amazing yellow and red arrow, the joked that she could
not take any credit for finding the road because it happened completely
by chance. Blake and Paige and Tara/Wil arrived at the Pit Stop simultaneously,
but Blake/Paige beat Tara/Wil to the mat by one minute. Phil
later explained that, because of one of those mysterious techinical difficulties,
Tara/Wil were going to be credited with 1 minute. This put both teams
in a tie for first place. As a reward, both teams won a trip to London
and Paris.
Chris/Alex, meanwhile, were having big difficulties. They got very
lost and stopped to ask a Hawaiian man for directions. The man was
trying to be helpful, but he waved his hands in different directions.
When they asked how far the road was, the man said "A little bit far,"
which caused Chris/Alex to wonder out loud how far "a little bit far" really
is. Chris/Alex set out, with apparently little more confidence than
they had before the talk. They saw something that resembled a road
and thought they saw some 4x4 vehicles, so they drove off up this hill.
Their vehicle reluctantly went up the hill, but when Chris/Alex got up
there, they saw that there was nothing in sight. They joked that
they were "driving over volcanoes." They eventually found their way
to the church in last place, about an hour behind. They'll have to
do better than that in the second half if they want to win.
