The vast majority of this episode consisted of teams criss-crossing the Atlantic trying to get to Cape Town via the most insane route possible. Shola and Doyin, the first to arrive last week, open their route info and find out they're going to Cape Town, South Africa. Once there they will have to find Nelson Mandela's former prison cell on Robben Island. They take a taxi waiting for them at the top of a hill and rush off to find a flight to Sao Paulo, where all flights to Cape Town must originate. All the other teams do the same, except for the grannies who are asleep. Blake realizes the grannies have overslept and missed their check-out time, but decides not to wake them. The grannies eventually wake up and leave 37 minutes after their scheduled departure time. Blake and Paige leave soon after.
All of the teams make it to an
airport where they will fly to Sao Paulo in the morning. The teams
are all on one of two flights which leave 5 minutes apart. So, when
they get to Sao Paulo, its a mad dash to ticket counters to try to book
tickets to Cape Town. But the teams soon discover that all flights
direct to Cape Town are booked solid for 2 days, so they'll have to either
wait or find an alternate route. And here is another one of those
strange Amazing Race moments. The quality of the route each team
gets is related in no way to the order in which they booked their flights.
Tara and Wil, the last team to get a flight, ended up with one of the best.
So, here is the list of which routes which teams took in the order in which
they left the airport:
Shola/Doyin and Cyndi/Russel - Sao Paulo to Madrid to London
to Cape Town (Cyndi/Russel on standby in London)
Mary/Peach - Sao Paulo to Milan to London to Cape Town
Gary/Dave - Sao Paulo to Lisbon to London to Cape Town
Oswald/Danny - Sao Paulo to London to Cape Town
Peggy/Claire - Sao Paulo to New York to London to Johannesburg
to Cape Town
Chris/Alex - Sao Paulo to Frankfurt to London to Cape Town
Blake/Paige and Tara/Wil - Sao Paulo to London to Cape Town
(Blake/Paige on standby in London)
Well, Blake/Paige and Cyndi/Russel cannot get onto
their flights out of London so they immediately fall behind. The
grannies missed their connection in London and are pretty much guaranteed
to be eliminated. Other than that, I guess things went as planned
and somehow, after all the flying, several groupings of teams occurred.
Gary/Dave, Oswald/Danny, and Tara/Wil get there first and co-operate throughout
the rest of the episode. Mary/Peach were pretty much by themselves
in the next spot. Shola/Doyin and Blake/Paige arrived at about the
same time and co-operated throughout the rest of the episode. Finally
Chris/Alex and Cyndi/Russel arrive and co-operate.
So the first set of teams gets to the ferry
dock that will take them to Robben Island. Gary/Dave miss the ferry
literally by a
few seconds, so they must wait an hour for the next one. They all
make it to the island where they find the route marker in the jail cell
which directs them to take a ferry back to the mainalnd and find Kalk Bay
Harbor. So they do. Mary/Peach arrive and make it to the cell
also. At about the same time, the first teams are arriving at Kalk
Bay, where they are presented with a detour. This week, they get
to choose between Dance and Deliver. The Dance option requires the
teams to dance with a local troupe and earn 25 Rand (about $2.50) in tips.
The Deliver option requires the teams to carry loads of fish across the
dock until they have reached 125 kg.
All 3 of the first set choose to dance
and earn the money quickly. After finishing dancing they get the
information that directs them to take a train to Cape Town Station and
then go to Langa Township and find the Paradise Hair Salon. So they
do. Mary/Peach arrive and dance and do the same. Shola/Doyin
and Blake/Paige get the information from the jail cell and make their way
to the harbor too. At the harbor, Blake/Paige immediately decide
to dance while Shola/Doyin initially decide to carry fish. But, after
the fish people seemed confused ("What, you want to help us carry fish?
huh?"), they decide to dance too.
So now the first set of teams is arrive at the Paradise Hair Salon.
There, they get a road block. They must buy some epsom salts and
a "smiley," the local word for a sheep's head, and take them to Ndaba Sangama,
a local healer. He will prepare a remedy for them which they must
drink to get the next route information envelope. The teams stroll
through the township. Oswald befriends a local man who shows him
around. Wil and Gary drink the remedy which Gary says tastes like
a combination of "Clorox Bleach and mouthwash." Yum! They all
get the information which directs them to the Lanzerac Manor Winery, the
pit stop for this episode. Oswald/Danny arrive first, followed closely
by Tara/Wil and Gary/Dave.
Meanwhile, Mary/Peach are in a bus on the way
to the township, where a local informs them that if they go there, they
will be robbed and murdered: "All I can say is if you like living, you
won't go there." So, naturally, their bus breaks down on the
way
to the township and they must walk the rest of the way. But,
they make it, and Mary actually enjoys performing the road block.
She gives some local kids sunglasses, and they seem to get a lot of enjoyment
out of them. So Mary/Peach make their way to the pit stop and arrive
fourth. Shola/Doyin and Blake/Paige arrive and go through the
road block and make their way to the pit stop. They jump on the mat
together and tie for fifth place.
Its afternoon now and finally Chris/Alex and Cyndi/Russel
arrive in Cape Town. They see each other at the ferry and both
seem
relieved that there is someone as far behind as themselves. At the
detour, both teams decide to carry the fish. Chris/Alex finish first,
but stay to help Cyndi/Russel finish. I can't decide if that is genuine,
or maybe Chris/Alex assumed they were the last two teams and they wanted
to keep Cyndi/Russel in sight so they knew they were ahead of them.
Anyway, they make their way to the roadblock and finally the pit stop that
night, where Chris/Alex rush ahead and finish 7th, and the pastors finish
in 8th.
Well, while all of this is still going on, the grannies are still in London, not even on the right continent yet. The next morning they arrive at the jail cell where the route info, mercifully, tells them to go to Lanzerac Manor, bypassing the detour and road block. They arrive and are eliminated, but take it all in stride. Claire says, "You know, its ok." I get the feeling they are amazed they made it as far as they did and are happy just to have had the experience.
