Stage 2 - Sanding

To remove most of the primer, you will be using either an electric palm sander, or a compressor driven circular sander which is what I used.  Start with 80 grit paper to begin removing the primer.

BE VERY CAREFUL when sanding with this coarse of a grit.  One slip of your hand, or staying in one area too long will seriously tweak the body shape and you will have a nice dip in your body...

You could always start with a smoother grit, like a 120.  If you really want to be cautious you can use a 220grit, but it will take a LOT longer to get rid of the primer coat.  Be especially careful around the edges and the horns.  Keep all contours smooth, and all points sharp.

Not a lot of explanation necessary for this part.  Just be careful, and take your time.  Once the majority of the primer is gone, everything else must be done by block sanding by hand.

Back of the guitar.  This is as far as I went with the circular sander.  Everything else was done by hand.

Shot of top of body on my bench ready for hand sanding.  I did the first sand with 180 grit, then 220.  If the lower arm contour wasnt sanded through to bare wood, this could almost be the new KorN BullSh8T Signature Ibanyizz.

Block sanded by hand with 180 grit.

Still rockin out with the 180 grit.

Looks like I forgot to take a few in between photos.  You get the idea.  All primer needs to be GONE.

And here is what it looks like with the primer all stripped away, and sanded down to bare wood.  This is a typical Japanese made Ibanyez...  BASSWOOD body.  Very very ugly wood.  The body in these pics was all hand sanded again with 320grit paper.  It is incredibly smooth, almost feels like glass.
