Raw Veneer - Flattening
| When you order your veneer, chances are it will come in fairly big sheets. Rare is the day that you will get EXACTLY the dimension you want. After all, veneer dealers don't like selling little tiny pieces. This is what your raw veneer will look like when you get it. | |||
Here is another shot of the veneer laid out. It is VERY bumpy, and wavy... by no means flat. |
|||
And here is another shot... I
show you this, just because I can. Wavy... unworkable. Brutal,
and totallly garfunkled. These camera angles suck, because these
pieces have some WICKED grain goin' on.

| So... How does one flatten veneer? Water, Glycerine, Plywood, Craft Paper, and Weight. Go spend $2.99 at Walgreens and buy the Glycerine. Spend another $2.49 and buy a spray bottle. Mix your solution 90% water, 10% glycerine. | |||
| Radical technology at work here.... It's... PLYWOOD. Go to Home Depot, ask if they have any "cull" lumber (throwaway lumber). I got what I needed for $2.00 and bought the dude a Soda. I needed 2 pieces that were 58" long by 20" wide. If they don't have any cull lumber, it'll prolly be around $10 - $15 for some cheap ass plywood. They will cut the dimensions you need. | ![]() |

Right. So lay one piece of plywood down, and cover it up with a piece of brown craft paper, like this:
|
|||
Take your glycerine/water solution,
lay out a piece of the veneer, set the spray bottle to a fine mist
and cover BOTH sides of the veneer. Now lay the veneer on top
of the brown craft paper, which is on top of the plywood.
|
|||
| Repeat the above for as many pieces of veneer as you have. I had 3 pieces. You are making a plywood, craft paper, veneer sandwich... hold the Mayo. So. Plywood, craft paper, wet veneer, craft paper, wet veneer, craft paper, wet veneer, craft paper, plywood. This is a pic of my veneer sandwich, with my high tech weights on top. I actually used different weights after this pic. Notice the Yngwie Malmsteen TAB book. OLD School. | |||
After this sits for 24 hours,
remove all the shtuff, and check your veneer. It SHOULD be flat
by this point. If it IS flat, GOOD. If not, don't worry
about it, cuz you can't use it yet. Replace all of the brown
craft paper with fresh pieces, and sandwich again. It will take
approx 5 days to completely dry. NOW you are ready to apply it
to your guitar, or your kid brothers lunchbox.
