Ch. 9

Fujin pulled the sword out of Kanji, and his nearly lifeless body fell to the ground. Fujin dropped the sword and sank to his knees. “Oniisama… I’m so sorry…”

Yami spun to face Fujin. “Boy, what are you doing? Finish him!”

Behind Yami, Aisu and the others nodded in silent agreement. Mizu took of her heavy backpack and swung it as hard as she could at Yami’s head.

Yami staggered forward, then turned angrily to face Mizu. “You just made a deadly mistake!” he roared.

“No,” came Fujin’s voice, deadly serious. “You won’t hurt her.”

Yami turned around again. “What did you just say?”

Fujin stared at Yami, gray eyes focused on him. “I said, ‘you won’t hurt her’. Are you deaf?”

“You insolent fool! I should have killed you first, rather then have you kill that useless person you call-“

“Don’t insult him.” Fujin stood up. “He’s more then you could ever be. How dare you use me!”

“Fujin, we’ll take care of this,” said Mizu.

“No. I’ll take care of this. I’m tired of being the little brother who always needs protection. This time, I’m doing the protecting.”

“Fujin, we’ll help you!” insisted Aisu. “We didn’t come all this way just to watch!”

“You came to help me defeat Evil. Now, this battle is personal. I’ll fight him.”

            “But-,” protested Kogasu.

            “I’ll fight,” repeated Fujin.

Yami smirked. “How sweet,” he jeered, “The little brother wants revenge. Well, I have news: Your fear makes me stronger.”

Fujin practically radiated rage. “I’m not afraid of you. I may be afraid of other things, but I’m not afraid of you!” He picked up his sword and pointed it at Yami. “I know exactly what you are, and I cannot let you survive!”

Yami kept the annoying smirk on his face. “I can feel your fear growing. You’re scared that your brother is dead. You’re scared that you killed him. You scared that your so-called friends might hurt you. You-“

            “Shut up.”

            “Excuse me?”

“You really must be deaf. I said, ‘shut up.’”

What’s happening to him? thought Mizu, looking at Fujin. Or, more accurately, trying to look at him. She, along with Aisu and Kogasu, was having trouble focusing on Fujin, as if seeing him through an intense heat haze. Mizu squinted, trying to see Fujin better.

Suddenly, Fujin came back into focus. However, he looked different. Mizu gasped. In his place stood a teenage boy of sixteen years old. The boy’s eyes, Fujin’s eyes, were filled with sorrow and rage.
