Notes and Glossary

· The names in this book are written Japanese-style, with the family (last) name first, followed by the given (first) name.

· Honorifics

o –chan: Used between classmates, usually girls, or a boy to a girl. Denotes familiarity. Also used when someone is thought cute. Also used when an older person is talking to a younger girl.

o –kun: Used between classmates, usually boys, or a girl to a boy. Denotes familiarity. Also used when an older person is talking to a younger boy.

o –san: Default honorific. Denotes respect, or used when not familiar with the person speaking to.

o –sensei: Teacher.

o No honorific: Used between very close people, such as family or lovers. When used between people normally, it is disrespectful. Further in the book, the group gets closer to each other and stops using honorifics as often.

· 漢字 is the Kanji for “Kanji.”

· こがす is the Hiragana for “Kogasu.”

· Arigato gozaimasu- Thank you very much

· Baaningu no Kanketsusen- Burning Geyser; Geyser’s Burning

· Chouaku no Tsukikaze- Whirlwind of Punishment; Punishment’s Whirlwind

· Erementaru no Supairaru- Elemental Spiral [I believe. There is no actual word for ‘elemental’ the way it was meant in this story, so I attempted to put it into Romaji.]

· Gomen nasai- More polite form of “I’m sorry.”

· Gomen ne- I’m sorry

· Hai- Yes

· Hikari no Shiido- Seed of Light; Light’s Seed

· Hi- Fire

· Mizu- Water

· Aisu- Ice

· Kaze- Wind

· Ai- Love

· Honoo no Kyousha- Flame Spear; Spear of Flame

· Itadakimasu- Literally, “I will receive.” Said before eating.

· Manga- Japanese comics

· Ohayou gozaimasu- Enthusiastically, ‘good morning’

· Oneechan- cute form of ‘older sister’

· Onigiri- Rice ball

· Oniisama- Most respectful form of ‘older brother’

· Oyasuminasai- Good night

· Shoujo- Girl

· Shukun- master

· Sumimasen- Excuse me; I’m sorry

· Supaasonikku no Buumu- Supersonic Boom; Boom of Supersonic
