About Me:  Resume  |  My Pictures

My name is Ann Hamilton. I completed my doctoral degree in communication at the University of Oklahoma in June 2002. My dissertation, which you find here, focuses on the historical development and contemporary functioning of Institutional Review Boards.

The purpose for this website is to gather comments and suggestions about IRBs from anyone involved in the process: regulators, researchers, and participants. With these comments and suggestions, it becomes more likely that we may improve the protection of human subjects of research, the rights of researchers to pursue their questions, and reduce the often unreasonable burdens put on IRB members.

It appears from what I have learned so far that many regulations do little to protect research participants while restricting in substantial ways the rights of researchers.

I am currently Assistant Professor of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. www.ausharjah.edu
