| BELIZE
Located between Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Guatemala, Belize lies on the
eastern coastline of Central America and is 175
miles long and 68 miles wide. A lot or areas are covered by mountains
and waterfalls. The Cayes, atolls and the barrier reef are the main
attraction. The cayes are islands or mangroves.
The mangrove cayes are usually uninhabited by humans, providing a great
habitat for birds and marine life.
The island cayes, which their palm trees are the foundation for water sports
enthusiasts and marine naturalists.
Belize's offshore barrier reef, which starts about 15 miles offshore is the
largest in the Western Hemisphere, nearly 190 miles long. A fantasy
seascape of colorful sponges, coral canyons, ledges and underwater caves and
caverns. Technicolor reefs explode with marine life and both novice and
experienced divers find exhilarating diving with colorful coral gardens and
numerous tropical fish. Belize's most fascinating dive is the Blue
Hole. A huge cave, once dry as evidenced by stalactites. A
portion of this cave collapsed at some point in time, forming a blue hole
more than 400 feet deep and nearly 1,000 feet in diameter. It is quite
a sight to see the stalactites silhouetted against the blue glow of filtered
light.
