| CAYMAN ISLANDS
Located between Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, is the British Overseas
Territory know as the Cayman Islands. This trio of islands
with extraordinary reefs, superb marine life and white sand beaches is
consistently named one of the world's top dive destinations.
Grand
Cayman and Little Cayman are pretty much flat with rocky coastlines.
Cayman Brac rises to 140' and falls sharply into the sea. They are
separated from each other by a channel about seven miles wide. The
islands are limestone outcroppings, the tops of a submarine mountain range
called the Cayman Ridge. The islands lack rivers or streams because of
the porous nature of the limestone rock. The lack of runoff gives the
surrounding ocean its exceptional visibility, often exceeding 120 ft.
The islands
are surrounded by coral reefs at the top of dramatic walls and drop-offs
close to shore. The
pristine beauty of the warm Caribbean Sea provides a spectacular marine
environment for reef, wall and even some wreck diving. Dive among lush
coral gardens, giant sponges, trees of black coral, and sea fans.
Who has not heard of Bloody Bay Wall, rising to within 20 feet to the
surface and plunging to depths of more than a mile? Or mesmerizing
Stingray City!
