| TRUK (CHUUK)
Located in Micronesia, north of Papua New Guinea, the tiny island of Truk (Chuuk)
is part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Truk consists of
11 major islands and many smaller islets within a lagoon surrounded by a
protective reef. It is a
wreck-diver's paradise, that some people call a WWII Underwater Museum.
Over 40 vessels were sunk in just two days during World War II.
The wrecks have become amazing artificial reefs teeming with vibrantly
colored soft corals which are home to an abundance of tropical fish,
anemones, gorgonians, eagle rays and shark feedings.
Dive the ghost fleet of Truk Lagoon and explore history while diving the
Shinkoku Maru, the Fujikawa Maru, the Nippo, and the Yamakiri with their cargo of
trucks, ammunition, dinnerware and sake bottles, uniforms and other personal
belongings still undisturbed. Experienced divers can explore the
pilothouse, galley and engine room of the Fujikawa, and even the cargo
holds, where several nearly complete Japanese Zero fighters rest in silence.
Depths on the wrecks vary. Some can even be explored while snorkeling,
while others go in excess of 200 feet. |
