Entry
To enter Ecuador only a valid passport is required. No
visas are required for US, Canadian, and most European citizens.
Check with the nearest Ecuadorian consulate prior to departure to
determine if a visa is necessary.
Climate
As the islands are directly on the Equator, you can expect it to be
warm most of the year. There are two seasons, May-December is
considered the cold season, with temperatures from 68-82F, the hot
season January-April, the temperature is between 70-84F. During a
severe El Nino, you can expect rain and thundershowers at any time.
Currency
Ecuador has adopted the US dollar as its
official currency in April 2000. The US Dollar replaced the Sucre.
Major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted widely.
Language
The official language of the Galapagos is Spanish, but
the indigenous languages Quechua, and Quichua are common. Some English
is spoken.
Diving
Due to strong currents, cold water, thermo clines, and
visibility, the Galapagos islands are not recommended for every diver.
The best time to dive is October-July when water temperatures are warmer
and visibility is better.
Water
The waters of the Galapagos Islands are a unique mixture
of warm and cold water, ranging between 65F and 83F, with thermo clines
about 65F.
Departure tax
The international departure tax is US$25.
Health
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travelers over
one year of age arriving from infected areas.
All water should be regarded as being potentially contaminated. Water used
for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice should have first been boiled or
otherwise sterilized. We recommend that you drink bottled water to prevent
illness.
