Entry
A valid
passport as well as a return or onward ticket are required to enter the
Solomon Islands. Depending on the nationality of the visitor, a
Visa might be required. Check with the nearest Solomon embassy
before departure.
Climate
The climate is tropical, average temperatures yeararound of 85F.
From April to October, the Southeast trade winds blow, and it is dry &
windy. November to March, it is warmer and more humid with monsoon
rains and the possibility of cyclones. Cyclones start in the Coral Sea
and the area of the Solomon Islands, but they usually steer towards Vanuatu
and New Caledonia or down the coast of Australia.
Water
The water temperature averages between 80-85F.
Currency
The Solomon Islands dollar (SI) dollar is the official currency.
Traveler checks can be changed at provincial capitals, but rarely elsewhere.
So it is best to change your travelers checks at a bank in Honiara before
traveling to outer regions. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels
and restaurants in Honiara and at larger hotels and resorts in the
provinces.
Language
English is the official language, but Solomon Island Pijin and some
87 local languages and dialects are spoken everywhere. Even though
English is the official language and widely understood, it is rarely spoken.
Diving
Dives are made from either a dinghy or the mother ship.
Departure tax
There is a SI$30 airport departure tax.
Health
It is tropical so there is Malaria. Consult with your
physician on anti malarial medication. Malaria risk is highest during the
west season. It is advisable to boil the water before drinking or get
bottled water.
Electricity
The electricity supply is 230/415 volts at 50Hz
