Entry
A valid passport as well as a return or onward ticket are
required to enter Papua New Guinea. A 30 day visitor Visa is
available upon arrival at Port Moresby for less than $15. You can
also obtain a visa prior to arrival directly from the Papua New Guinea
Embassy.
Climate
Temperature is pretty stable all year between 80-90F, but
humidity and winds are changeable. Temperatures drop at higher
altitudes, and it can be very chilly in the Highlands. The
climate is the main consideration in deciding when to visit Papua New
Guinea. You probably want to avoid the rainy season. The wet season is
December to March, the dry season from May to October. During the two
transition months (April and November), the weather can't make up its mind
and tends to be unpleasantly still and sticky.
Water
Visibility ranges from 80-150ft, depending on the season.
The water temperature averages between 79-82F.
Currency
The Papua New Guinea
Kina is the official currency.
Traveler checks can be changed in every major town, but rarely elsewhere.
So it is best to change your travelers checks at a bank upon arrival before
traveling to outer regions. Credit cards are not widely accepted, but
will be accepted in some hotels and restaurants.
Language
There are over
750 indigenous languages in PNG, plus Pidgin and Motu. Many
educated people would prefer that you speak in English as English is the
official language in schools and government.
Diving
Dives are either made from a dinghy or the mother ship.
Departure tax
The departure tax is about US$7.
Health
It is tropical so there is Malaria. Consult with your
physician on anti malarial medication. Malaria risk is highest during the
west season. Cholera and typhoid vaccinations are suggested.
Again check with your physician.
It is advisable to boil the water before drinking or get
bottled water.
Electricity
The electricity supply is 240 volts at 50Hz. Plugs are
three-in Australian style. |
