News Beliefs
No single belief is universal across all the countries of Nosizwe. Scholars,
however, have been able to ascertain that the majority of known beliefs have
roots in the religion of the ancient Cruithne; the people who in ancient
history ruled the entire continent.
The Cruithne believed in a multitude of gods and goddesses, all sharing the
common trait of being connected with nature, and frequently with one of the
four elements of magic. Belief in an Otherworld was very common - a place of
joy, where feasts were always on. The Cruithne believed that everyone entered
the Otherworld when they died, with the highest places set aside for those who
died in combat. Waterfalls were one of the many doorways to the Otherworld.
They believed in omens, and celestial occurrences such as comets or eclipses
could be good or bad omens. Birds, especially predatory birds, were believed to
be able to carry messages between the living world and the Otherworld.
In Liosliath, there is no singular entity which predominates, with each family
embracing their own local deities. Generally there is a belief in a Otherworld
as a place of joy, although there is a tendency to believe it is a reward,
while there is a Netherworld for those who do great harm in this life to their
Clan or family.
There is whispered talk of a small secretive group dwelling in caves in the
eastern extremes of the Naithair mountain range. The group, likely myth, is
supposed to live in the barren lands at the northeast corner of Liosliath;
lands who worship the dark. The cult is rumored to be comprised of the
ancestors of the Mordant, Garragg and Liosliath mages who wasted the lands.
Other than this, beliefs of Liosliathians tend towards the positive.
Liosliath does celebrate equinox (autumn and spring) and solstice (summer and
winter) on approximately the 21st day of the last month of every quarter of the
calendar year.
The winter solstice - longest night of the year - is traditionally a day of
indoor feasting with many uneasy to spend time outdoors at night. The summer
solstice - longest day of the year - is given over to joyous outside
celebrations lasting the entire day and well into the night. Generally
considered the most auspicious of dates, it is a time for couples to become
betrothed, weddings to be held and new ventures to be started.
