News Liosliath
Liosliath is comprised of five individual kingdoms (clan
holdings) which share a common heritage and a common future and are currently
ruled by Thane Niahl Docartaig. The total population of Liosliath is estimated
at 280,000, roughly equally distributed to the five clans, (50,000 per clan),
30,000 within Carraig and less than a thousand permanently in Caer Glass. The
approximate 30,000 population of Carraig is roughly split 20,000 who claim
Liosliath heritage and 10,000 foreigners, many of the foreigners transitory.
Each clan, with a population of approximately 50,000, is roughly comprised
between 500 and 1,000 nobles, 5,000 or so upper / higher middle class with the
remainder number distributed between the middle and lower middle class,
commoners and bonds people.
Liosliath is a peninsula on the southwest tip of the continent. The high and
treacherous Naithair Mountains separate Garragg and Liosliath. The Naithair
Mountains with just two passes has buffered Liosliath from a majority of the
wars which have ranged through the lands over history. Buffered but not
isolated as Liosliath has experienced land based invasions and attempted
invasions over the years. Liosliaths coastline, though rugged, does have ports
and other areas where ships can land. Sea based invasions or raids by other
countries have been attempted some with limited degrees of success, to this day
occasional coastal raids are not unheard of.
Caer Glas is the traditional keep of the Thane of Liosliath, a keep with grey
stone walls which looks down on the port city of Carraig on the Bay of Lathi.
From here the Thane with the advisory assistance of the Pennaeth Council rules
Liosliath. Caer Glas is first and foremost a fortress, a place where all who
dwell close by can seek safety if and when attacks are made. Carraig as the
major port city, seen by foreign countries as a key to Liosliath, has been
attacked numerous times in history. The keep ruins in the heart of Carraig are
mute testimony to past attacks.
The ruler (Thane) of Liosliath holds his crown by personal strength, leadership
skills, political manipulations, keeping the allegiance of the majority of the
Pennaeth Allting (Pennaeth Council) and allegiance of Carraig leaders. The
Thane strengthens his position by forging relationships across the strata of
the individual clans. The thane has political and economic advantage in that
the vast majority of the external trade is via Carraig, a city the Thane for
all practical purposes fully controls. The majority of those of Liosliath in
Carraig support the Thane. In some respects those who live in Carraig and the
Thane share a common bond as they are no longer of Clans. While clan remains
heritage, they are now almost a sixth clan being Carraig
Each of the five major clans (news clans) is headed by a Pennaeth, that person
rules the clan; his/her word is the law. Traditionally a persons ambitions and
allegiances are in order to self, family, hamlet/town (area where person
lives), clan and finally to Liosliath itself. Individualism, doing the best one
can and striving for more, is valued as such tends to enhance the clan. Well
understood is the responsibility and position each has within the clan
structure with respect paid upwards by manner and speech. A farmer commoner for
example would not presume to address one of the middle, upper or noble class in
a familiar manner. Conversely one of the upper class would realize and
understand the importance of those under he/her to the importance of the clans
well being. Still the upper class person will command and make demands on the
lower classes. Clan members are generally fiercely loyal to their clan.
Those of Liosliath, who move from their home lands to Carraig, do so for a
variety of reasons. Some being : They need to leave because big family reasons,
local famine, or whatever reason makes it difficult for them to find living or
support where they are some specific reason (crime etc), or the person is of a
adventurous nature, willingness to seek something else or are drawn to the
center of power, Caer Glas.
Liosliathians who live within Carraig, while still retaining their clan ties,
become more cosmopolitan, their allegiances are typically in order to self,
family, Carraig and Liosliath. Clan loyalty while remaining takes on less
importance. Carraig has its own social structure alongside what is normal in
Liosliath; wealth here can mean more than title / birth position. Still the
commonly accepted forms of address and social conventions are strictly adhered
too.
