In addition to the White Company, which has its own commander who only answers
to the Thane, each Pennaeth has, in addition to his/her clan responsibilities
the responsibility of patrolling and protecting the borders of Liosliath which
is within the Pennaeths domain.
Specifically: Pennaeth Gulban is responsible for Vik Pass of the Naithair
Mountains and the northwestern shoreline. Pennaeth McDaid is responsible for
the Piorad Pass of the Naithair Mountains and the north western shoreline.
Pennaeth Gulban is responsible for the northern border at the Naithair
Mountains, as the Gulban holdings have no other borders not within Liosliath,
the Gulbans have long had a history of providing aid at the Vik or Piorad Pass
as and when needed. Pennaeth Melaghlin has responsibility for the central
eastern shoreline. Pennaeth Docartaig has responsibility for the southern
shorelines of the peninsula. Each Pennaeth appoints one of his/her clan to lead
and train the warriors of the clan.
In times of war or under circumstances warranting, the Thane calls upon the
Pennaeths to join under the banner of Liosliath.
NEWS ARMY -
Albeit Liosliath is a sea-faring nation it has never had a large, standing,
navy. In this day and age, battle at sea is a close run thing, with ships
acting as transports for military forces rather than platforms for ranged
weaponry. The preferred tactic of the Clans is close up and personal, on land
or at sea, a fact that has resulted in a high level of boarding-skill.
In times of war, private vessels are called upon to serve in the role as troop
transports, remaining under Navy rules and discipline for the duration of the
conflict. This ensures a solid backbone of experienced sailors, and reduce the
cost of maintaining dedicated warships.
An exception exists in the - currently - six-ship squadron of flywood (news
flywood) skimmers that patrol the waters around Liosliath, with their main
focus the bay of Lathi. These ships are the training-grounds for navy officers
and sailors, even as they protect trade-routes, fight pirates, and stand as the
only, if thin, bulwark against invasion from the sea.
