Comments re Skid Row Turnpoints and Tasks (Revised 4-5-03)
Many thanks also to the Skid Row Posse, Del Blomquist, Doug Levy and Lane Decker, for sending me their corrections, comments, and criticisms during the preparation of these Turnpoints and Tasks. Thanks also to Greg Sperbeck for maintaining an outstanding website. We now have 40 Official Skid Row Turnpoints. One important addition is the parking area on top of the Pineapple Bowl (P-BOWL). This new turnpoint should come in handy as a Start Point for Sweepstakes flights because it is more than 10 km from Hot Springs Peak, No Name and the S-2 & Hwy 79 Intersection. If we used Warner Springs as the start point, all three of these hot spots would be disqualified as Sweepstakes turnpoints.. Lane recommended that we use airstrips as turnpoints wherever possible. This was done at Agangua and Ranchita. Unfortunately, the dirt airstrip east of Anza doesn't show up as an easily recognizable landmark, so we used the intersection in the middle of Anza. Latitudes and Longitudes were carried to three decimals using the Photomap program. The coordinates for Warner Springs were taken from the Airport Directory. Using the Photomap topographical map we determined the lat/longs of the summits of Mt. San Jacinto, Thomas Mt., Mt Cahuilla, NoName and Granite Peak. Concern was expressed that these mountain summits do not provide "easily recognizable" landmarks. The GPS coordinates are acceptable turnpoints for our local contests (as long as the track passes through the FAI sector). However, a pile of rocks may not qualify as a " . . .distinct and easily recognizable landmark that might also serve as a photo turnpoint." under current Sweepstakes rules. So, be careful what you use for turnpoints when making Sweepstakes flights. A good example is Mt. San Jacinto. The tramway building provides an easily recognizable landmark, where the summit may not. Assigned speed tasks A, B and C start at the Pineapple Bowl. E, F & G start at Hot Springs Peak. These tasks are designed for use on weak, average and booming days. If we can't figure out what kind of a day it's going to be, we can always fly a POST (D or H). All six speed tasks are longer than 50 km and should qualify as Sweepstakes flights. Remember, the FAI start zone is determined by your heading to the first turn point and, for safety reasons, the finish line is always Goose Lake (not Warner Springs). Please send me your comments and corrections. I will keep fine-tuning them as long as necessary. The goal is to insure that we are all using the same coordinates when we fly contests or submit flights to our Sweepstakes Observers for verification. Spring has sprung, and soaring conditions at Warner Springs are improving. So load up your GPSs, clear your track logs, kick the tire and light the fire! Every Skid Row pilot should make it their goal to post at least one Sweepstakes flight on the 1-26 Bragging Rights Page before we load up the wagons and head for Goal Strike XIV. http://www.126association.org/indexstart.htm Click on Sweepstakes. Happy Thermals!
