Growing up in Washington, D.C.

Washington was a special place to me.  I loved the city, and have many wonderful memories of special things associated with living there.  Here are some of them:

  • visiting the Tidal Basin in early April, to see the cherry blossoms

  • enjoying the glorious blooms of spring, and the spectacular colors of autumn

  • sitting on a blanket near the Capitol steps in the summer, listening to one of the military bands play a marvelous concert

  • sitting on a blanket at the foot of the Washington Monument, watching the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks

  • going to parades and being able to see the President of the United States driving by

  • going to Glen Echo, the amusement park out near Potomac, MD and being terrified on the roller coaster

  • going downtown with Mother and the twins to see the amazing animated Christmas windows done by the fancy department stores (Woodward and Lothrop, Jelleff's, Garfinkle's)

  • having lunch in the fancy tea room in Woodward and Lothrop, where a Mickey Mouse sandwich was peanut butter and jelly, and a Humpty Dumpty sandwich was, of course, egg salad

  • driving across "the ford" in Rock Creek Park, where the water was usually about 6" deep on the road, to visit Grandma and Grandpa Black

  • driving by the parks and circles with their wonderful statues

  • visiting the Zoo

  • eating at the S&W cafeteria downtown

  • going to a movie at the fancy downtown theaters (the Capitol, the Palace, and the Earl)

  • having an ice cream soda at People's Drug Store near Hecht's

  • taking visitors to the tourist attractions:

    • the White House (special passes required)

    • the Capitol

    • the Washington Monument

    • the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials

    • the FBI Building

    • Mt. Vernon

    • the National Museum of Natural History

    • the Smithsonian Museum

    • the Mellon Art Gallery

    • the Bureau of Printing and Engraving

    • the Folger Shakespeare Library

    • the National Archives

    • the Library of Congress
