Joel
Benjamin is a 3-time U.S. Champion, being co-champ in 1987 and 2000
and sole Champion in 1997. He has been a fixture in American chess for
decades and is only 41 years old. His USCF rating has been over 2700
several times and is one of the strongest native born US players in
history. He learned how to play chess at the age of 8 and became a master at age 13, setting a US Record for the time as youngest master. He became an IM at 16 and a Grandmaster at age 22. He is a 6-time U.S. Olympic team member and top scorer for the gold medal winning U.S. team in the 1993 World team Championship. He drew against World Champion Kasparov in a tournament game at Horgen, 1994. He won the 1989 Cannes Open, Rilton Cup 1996-1997 and Saintly Cup International 1999. He was chief chess consultant for IBM's Deep Blue project, 1995-1997, which defeated Kasparov. He appeared in the films Searching for Bobby Fischer and Game Over: Kasparov vs the Machine Joel's topic for the lecture this evening will be his match with the
reigning Computer World Champion Rybka. This match will take place in the
4 days before the simul, August 6-9, at club member Larry Kaufman's house
