1998 Club Championship

Arlington CC had gone without a formal club championship since 1987 when the late Jack Mayer won the title. For the largest club in the Old Dominion, DC and Maryland it was a crime to let this continue. When club president John Campbell managed to let George Mason University Law School to let us back in, I was determined to provide a club championship, a crucial event for any club.

Slightly less than 30 players plaued this year, perhaps a disappointing turnout of less than 10% of the clubs membership, but given the only 2 months of promotion, and no  ad in Chess Life, ot wasn't bad. The site was well lit, and despite final exams occuring during the Saturday games, it was a good experience.

IM Eugene Meyer trailed NM Phil Collier by 1/2 point going into the 4th and final round. This was setup by the 3rd round draw between Meyer and his brother NM John Meyer. IM Meyer dispatched Collier while NM Steve Greanias was defeating John Meyer which left Eugene in clear first at 3.5/4. Phil Collier was second at 3/4 and a 4 way tie for 3rd at 2.5/4 among Ram Avramhami, John Meyer, Steve Greanias and Nelson Egbert. A fitting result as the top 6 players, all masters finshed ahead of the field - speaks nicely of the predictive value of the rating system!

Krishnan Sudharsan swept the Amateur field to take clear first at 4-0. He struggled a little in the last round game with Bragdon but otherwise dominated the field.

The 1999 Club Championship will most likely happen in May and will be advertized in Chess Life as a Grand Prix event - it will do better!
