Mele Kohola, Hawaiian for Whale Song, is a place where you can escape harried urban existence and relax to the sound of waves breaking on the shoreline and luxuriate in the caress of friendly tradewind breezes. Dainty white and lavender orchids and grow in the lush surrounding fields and, in season, graceful humpback whales frolic in the protected, deep water cove just off shore. Mele Kohola, located on the East coast of Hawaii, just minutes from quaint Pahoa town and from the stores of downtown Hilo, offers peace, refuge and tranquility within easy reach of of some of East Hawaii's favorite island restaurants. Mele Kohola provides a comfortable home base for your tours of the Big Island of Hawaii and, in itself, offers some of the most dramatic coastline views that East Hawaii has to offer. Hawaii Volcano National Park, home to many rare and endangered plants and animals such as the elusive scarlet i'iwi honey creeper, the friendly Nene Goose and the towering Koa and Ohia trees, is within easy access. For those of you that just want to "hang loose", a relaxing soak in the volcanic hot ponds is a few minutes away as well as the boat landing, on the way to Kalapana, where the locals jump off the pier into geothermally warmed waters.

In old Hawaii, Hula was sacred and was taught under strict rules. When the missionaries arrived, they strived to eliminate hula and were nearly successful. Fortunately, Hula was revived by King Kalaukaua and survives to this day. Hilo, Hawaii is the current home of the Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, one of the largest hula competitions today. If you would like to attend, you will need to book your reservations far in advance as Hilo fills up really quickly. Hopefully, you will consider staying at Mele Kohola. Below are some videos to give you an idea of what to expect.
